Post subject:  upgrading brakes on '72 Valiant

I need advice regarding the SBP KH 4 piston disc brakes available on the A-bodies in the late 60's and early '70's. Any issues that they may have and how do they perform?. I may have the opportunity to get a complete set up and really like that they will fit within the 14" X 4.5" wide wheels. My other option is the scarebird conversion which I am also considering. I want to stay with the SBP at this time. Thanks in advance!

The KH is ALL that I run. I like the stopping power and the small bolt pattern wheels. Look to Mustang vendors for parts as well as Rock Auto.

I had KHs on my 66 Dart GT HP V8. Worked great. Braking was much more stable in the wet than in the 66 Dart 270 with 10" drums. I don't like the flexibility of the 14" SBP wheel, nor the max factory width of 5½" inches. But that's not a brake problem, per se.

If you plan to stay SBP and can get a set of KHs at a condition/price you like, do it. The big advantage I can see of the KH over the Scarebird is when it comes time to replace the pads. You simply use a stock factory replacement from any reasonable source and there's nothing else to remember.

I like the KH 4-piston discs when set up well. In my experience, that means carefully-chosen organic pads, not metallic, and a 1"-bore master cylinder; 10" rear drums with 13/16"-bore wheel cylinders -- no booster. With the stock 15/16"-bore rear wheel cylinders in 10" drums, it's too easy to lock up the rears under medium-hard braking. The 13/16" cylinders clear that up nicely.

BUT...

I like the '73-up single-piston discs better. A lot better. There's a much bigger range of much less costly parts much more easily available for the later system. You can get two different caliper bores, a bunch of different rotors...this system was used through 1989 on the F-body Aspen/Volare, the M-body Diplomat/Gran Fury/New Yorker Fifth Avenue, and others. The only disadvantages are that you will have to get different ('73-up) control arms and unless you redrill the rotors, you'll have to go to the large (4½") wheel bolt circle, and unless you also swap the rear axle for a later one, you'll still have the small (4") bolt circle in the back. There is a thread here about redrilling big-bolt rotors and hubs for small-bolt usage.

I don't think I'd hesitate to put in a Scarebird setup if I wanted everything new in one package, didn't have any ideological aversion to putting GM brakes on a Chrysler car, and didn't need or want to repair or upgrade any other suspension components.

I’m in the process of rebuilding the KH brakes on my Dart. The cost of rebuild parts & off the shelf rebuilt KH calipers is stupid expensive in comparison to other year & make disk brake systems that can be fitted.

If you are in need of replacing control arms, and ball joints, installing later model parts most likely would be cheaper in the long run where rotors & calipers are so much cheaper & readily available for the later systems. Remember the KH disk is held to the hub by press fit wheel studs, and can not be easily slid off hub like newer disks, requires pulling hub, frigging with wheel bearings, and seals which in my book is a big PIA at brake job time.

Shop Napa, and the other local part outlets for KH calipers, and ask if they can get them, you will get some ridiculous prices, and be told that they can’t get the left or right caliper, no longer made, blah, blah, blah… Shop Rock Auto, they have the parts in stock from several rebuilders offering different length warrantees, with sort of reasonably priced parts, and core values. Don’t forget the Rock discount code good for 5% off…

I think next brake rebuild, if I still have this car, I shall convert to newer stile brakes, and 4 ½â€￾ bolt pattern making replacing parts much easer, and a much larger selection of wheels & tires available.

If you are restoring to factory correctness, disregard the above chatter from Dan and me …
