1964 dodge dart.. 225 slant 6-
it's a fresh transplant (1967 engine)
she started up no problem... and ran for a bit..
the car isn't registered yet, i would go out and start in every other day or so..
each time i started it it was a little harder to start.. eventually it wouldn't start at all..
it stinks like gas.. and is seriously flooding-
took the carb apart and found some debris was stuck in the needle and seat.. cleaned the entire carb out, reinstalled and tried to start but no dice...(the car was sitting for 5 years.. i emptied the tank out put fresh gas and a new pick up sock) finally it kicked over and ran like total $#!+..back firing out of the carb and sputtering...i'm thinking i the carb needs to be rebuilt.. should i do it or send it to a carb shop?
who makes a good rebuilding kit?
it's a carter 1 barrel, and it's the carb that was on the original engine-
i have spark, and installed new plugs...

any ideas as to what would cause this to happen?

The float could be bad or out of adjustment. Needle and seat must be clean. You may have fouled the plugs at this point so I'd be buying a carb kit, float and spark plugs. No old fuel allowed either. Pump it all out and dispose of it with household hazardous waste.

When was the last time you looked at the points? They do not like to sit around.

The carter one barrel is one of the easiest carbs to rebuild. The only thing that goes bad from sitting is the accelerator pump. Does it squirt gas when you move the throttle? If you fill the carb with gas and let it sit with out running and then the gas dries out and you refill it with more gas you will build up a "varnish" that will gum up the works and now you need to rebuild. I have had some success with filling the carbs fuel bowl with spray carb cleaner, let it sit for a few hours and then run the engine.

i put new plugs in the engine yesterday... it's had an electronic ignition in it.. nappa has the kit in stock, i'll start there-
i think there may be some bad gas still in the system... i'll pump it out and put some fresh gas and an octane booster in-

stay tuned!

thanks-
