Post subject:  stalling problem

My '66 170 keeps stalling at low speed unless the choke is on, even after its warmed up. I installed a manual choke a while back and I have to keep the choke on at low speed, pull it of at highway speed, and put it back on when I slow down. I've checked the timing, replaced the plugs, wires, points condenser, cap and rotor and the fuel filter's not clogged. I also replaced the carb with a reman one and replaced the vacuum lines, but it didn't make any difference. I'm thinking its either not getting fuel or I have a vacuum leak. I checked fuel pressure today and its 5 psi at idle, and when revving the engine, it doesn't change at all. I was wondering if that's normal and if it is, is there a way to tell if there's a vacuum leak by hooking up a vacuum gauge.

Hopefully you kept your old carburetor. In the FAQ you will find a carburetor section with all the information for going through it.
The reman is probably not worth messing with.
If you kept your old carburetor, you can go through it.

What is your timing set at?

Check for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner around the base of the carb, and around the intake manifold. Don't spray it on when the engine is full hot. The fumes can be deadly. If the engine speed changes, you have found your leak.
