So my brother in law is obsessed with slant sixes. He noticed that my slant has an 8 1/4" rear end??? Plus she has front disc brakes. He speculates the car was originally an 8 banger because of the rear end and the brakes. I do find it weird that this slant has so much junk in the trunk lol.. Any thoughts as to WHY I have an 8 1/4" rear end? |

Because the car was ordered that way. With trailer tow package, with heavy-duty package...or just with upgraded brakes and rear axle. The bigger brakes and rear ends were completely available with 6-cylinder engines; your brother-in-law's guess is probably wrong; a V8-to-6 swap is certainly possible on the '67-up cars, but it requires a whole different K-frame. And the transmission would need changing. Other details, too. Check the car's VIN; what's the 5th character? Probably a "C". For that matter, if you accurately post the content of the fender tag (on the driver's side inner fender, a 2" × 3" metal plate stamped with letters and numbers) we can tell you a fair good bit about how, where, and when your car was built. (Also...your .signature pic is kind of on the big side, eh? We have members here still on slow connections, and a big sig pic like yours slows the works down for them, bigtime. Mind resizing your sig pic so it's no more than about 225px in either direction, resolution of 72dpi? Thanks.) |

Have you looked for your build sheet? On the back of the rear seat or perhaps under it? That will tell you a great deal. How about the fender tag? CJ |

Dan hit it on the head... The 1976 year is an oddball...new changes/upgrades to the electrical system...build dates after 1-1-76 are mandatory to get disc brakes, etc... If you have your fender tag, a few of us have the 1976 codes available... Your brother would've stood puzzled in front of my '74...stock 225/3 speed on the floor, manual disc brakes, 8 1/4" rear with 3.21's...no factory undercoating...sold in Seattle...no heavy duty codes/tow package/etc...and this isn't the first duster/dart sport from '73-'74 that got optioned this way... -D.Idiot |

For what it's worth, the 3.21 geared 8 1/4 rear I have in my '67 Valiant I pulled out of a slant six auto '73 to '76 Dart Swinger at the junkyard... |

Yep it's a "C". Yeah I re-sized it for everyone sorry about that.(Also...your .signature pic is kind of on the big side, eh?
