 My son and I inherited a Dodge 87 D100 we have be trying to keep running. All was good till he hit a bump on the right side and it started running rough. We tore into the carb and found black bits which I was told was from the canister. The replacement is expensive so was wondering about creative ways to keep her going until he can afford the part.

The ruptured charcoal canister was a common method of demise for many a D-series truck. The probability of getting all the charcoal bits out of the carb is nil. If you really need one, you can replace the charcoal inside your existing canister. I just tossed mine in the garbage because my new carb has no vacuum lines for it, or I would have given it to you. Bad timing I guess.

I have heard of folks adding a fuel filter to the vaccum line to catch the carbon,, don't know if it a good long term fix,, never did it myself.
