i think the problem is a box on the firewall, it has leaked all down the firewall and i was told that would cause the problems it's having. problem is, i don't know what (in Dodge-speak) that box is called. i tried looking up "Ignition Control Module" but what came up looks different and the plugs wouldn't match up. could someone point me in the right direction? and if that's not the problem, could someone help me figure it out? i know the truck would benefit from getting rid of the Lean Burn system but for the time being i just need to get it running right again...thanks in advance guys! |

Are you sure the melted box on the firewall isn't the lean burn computer? If your truck has a lean burn system then it is most likely the reason why the truck runs rough when hot. Lots of things can cause rough running. You might have a vacuum leak or problem in the carburetor causing the motor to run to lean or too rich when it is hot. Or, maybe you have a failing coil, worn spark plugs, bad plug wires, a worn dist cap and rotor, etc... I would start by doing a complete tune-up on your truck including all filters. Then report back. |

it could be the computer...but i thought the computer was in the air cleaner lid. this box on the firewall only has 2 wires coming out of it. i can snap a picture if that will help. the truck is going to get a tune up here soon, i'll report back after that and go from there. thanks for the help! |

If your voltage regulator has melted down then you should replace it. |

On my '82 Ram the lean burn is definitely on the air cleaner. The box with the wires on the firewall is the voltage regulator which handles the charging system. It shouldn't really affect the engine performance (until the alternator blows the battery up, or just doesn't charge it). If yours is anything like mine was, the lean burn probably died and everything defaults to super rich, and retarded ignition. "Safe Mode". Runs like crap. |
