| Post subject: | Slant dying at curb idle |
I just got my 73 Valiant back on the road after sitting for a few years. After freshening with new plugs, battery and Dist. she started right up. Drove great for a few days and now she is dying at stop signs and is making more white smoke than ever before. She usually runs very clean. I had to turn the idle up just to keep her running. Could this be the EGR valve? The carb was adjusted well and usually no problems. Is there a way to test the EGR? Very frustrating as this is my only car right now. On a positive note;the body work is coming along nicely! Cutting out all the rust and welding in new steel gives me hope. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

After a car has been unused for a few years the carburetor needs to disassembled, internal passages need to be blown out, and a rebuild kit installed. Additionally, a new fuel filter installed, and perhaps fuel tank needs to be cleaned. Start with rebuilding carburetor, and replacing fuel filter. And, don’t burn any of that old gas, drain the tank. Old gas will gum up valves, carburetor, and filters. |

All of the above. Also check for vacuum leaks at the carb and intake runners. |

I did empty and clean the tank, but did not replace the fuel filter or rebuild the carb. Looks like I've got some work ahead of me. Thanks again. |

Is the carb. a Holley 1920? It does not take much 'crud" to plug-up the idle curcuit on one of those. DD |

To check the EGR valve (only, not its control circuits) all you need is to rout a vacuum hose to it to turn it on (idle speed slows down or stops) and remove the vacuum to turn it off (idle speeds up). To test the temp switch check for vacuum at one terminal only and when the engine warms up the vacuum should be at the terminal that goes to the EGR. |

Thanks again for all the help guys. It is a Holley 1920 and I'm sure it could use a rebuild. I guess I'll have to put on my reading glasses to keep an eye on all the little bits and pieces. Cheers! |
