I replaced the oil in my /6 about 2 weeks ago. I used a cheap STP oil filter that I got in one of those package deals with a jug of oil. I got the STP because I was going to do one last 1k mile oil change to clean out the engine. I have a Purolator One for the next change.

Well, over the week I started developing a rod knock. Nothing on startup, but as the car got warmer and warmer it would get significant. Mostly at idle and high 1st and 2nd gear.

I changed the oil filter to the Purolator One filter and the noise "seems" to have gone away. I haven't driven it significantly today, but so far no sign of it.

Is the filter possibly to blame and has anyone had this happen?

Cheap filters make problems. They can restrict the oil flow and starve the bearings.

Yep...My father in law has a 93 Dodge Truck with the Cummins Diesel...he changed the oil and took the "daily special" quarts+ Fram filter for $X.XX....

He calls and complains the oil light is coming on, but the oil level shows full...I ask him what he put in...I then tell him to go back to town and get a Napa Gold filter and another couple of replacement quarts...and replace
the filter and top it up...funny, oil light never came back on and oil pressure was looking good...

Call me a believer. I thought getting through 1000 miles with a cheap STP would be easy. Guess I know better now. Before I was unsure, but there is a definite difference now that I've had time to go for a ride.

I promise to take my oil filter choice more seriously in the future!

I was curious what opinions were on filters. Rather than ask which you recommend, Feel free to reply with which brand of filter you AVOID. I'm curious if there's a consensus among poor quality filters.

I'll start with STP!

Fram is garbage. Wix is reliable. Purolator's reliable. Fleetguard is super-duper premium.

Some very detailed but somewhat outdated info here.

Whatever brand you pick, use the long filter, not the shorty. Examples of the long filter are Purolator L30001 or PureOne P30001, Wix 51515 (NAPA Gold 1515), Motorcraft FL-1A, Fleetguard LF-3487.

I use Fleetguard filters and I think they're at least as good as Wix and Purolator. Not only that, my parts supplier delivers them to my door, no charge. However, since they don't seem to be nearly as common in automotive applications as other brands, I haven't seen them included in any oil filter reviews.

Dan, why do you feel that Fleetguard filters are super-duper premium?

1. What I saw when I took one apart (pictures no longer exist :-( )

2. The manufacturer (Caterpillar) has a long and consistent reputation for not selling garbage, and they don't even pretend to compete on price with Debbie Do-It-Yerselfer/Harry Homeowner brands like Fram.

3. The LF-3487 is the specific one I have in mind with "super-duper premium"; it has an upgraded synthetic media. I use top-grade oil and filters so I don't have to wastefully change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
