Post subject:  Speedometer lubrication hole - UPDATE
Just wondering what this hole is for? Looks like it might be a lubrication reservoir? My speedometer is making noise, and I don't think it's the cable. I've had a dry cable before, and the needle behaves differently (kind of shakily moves back and forth). This is different. It's making kind of a grinding noise, and the needle tends to wrap around to the right (high-speed) side of the dial. I had the panel out a year ago to fix some electrical issues. While it was out, I squirted some WD-40 into the needle shaft hole from the front (dial) side. It seemed to help for a short while, then started making the noise again. Is this unit serviceable? I mean, is there a bearing or something that can be replaced? Anyway, hoping someone (Dan?) can chime in and enlighten me. Thanks!

WD-40 is not a oil/lubricant, use 3 in 1 oil. Or 20 W oil. WD-40 stands for Water Displacement (formula) 40. Works well for drying ignition cables.

The cap that you pointed out in your picture is a lubrication hole, gently remove the cap, I used a pocket knife and a pair of needlenose pliers (it bends easily) then remove the fiber plug and put some white lubricant in the hole (I used standard white grease) and replace the fiber plug and cap. That process fixed a similar problem with my speedometer.

The "fiber plug" is a wick for oil. It is suppose to be saturated with oil and acts as a oil reservoir and its topped off by putting a drop of oil in the cup once a year or so.

Thanks very much, guys. I thought it looked like a small hole in the top of the brass cup. I was never aware that this needed to be done on a regular basis. I'm really hoping this fixes the problem because I do not want to pull the instrument panel out a third time (a real PITA).

Finally got my car back on the road this past week, and just wanted to report that this fix worked. I removed the cap and put a few drops of some light oil in this port, and it fixed the problem. No more grinding noise. Thanks again guys!
