I have a 74 Duster, 225 slant six ( A/C)... 904 Auto Trans
Just put on Dutra duals and a Super Six pack.

Can anyone tell me what the rear end ratio and size would be on it...
or how I can find out.

Also, I would like to know what gear ratio I could go to to give me some extra kick off the line, but still be very drivable both around town and on the highway.

Hi Julie! If your Duster is like mine, it has a 2.73 rear gear and a 7-1/4" housing. A 3.23 will make a noticable difference, and a 3.55 would be better and still livable on the street. 3.91's are the most fun, but get pretty hard to live with if you do much highway driving

If you do any highway driving, I wouldn't recommend a 3.55 rear. I installed one in my Dart and found myself driving at a top speed of 70 mph on the highway...the car will top out at 85mph (4000+ rpm). With the 2.76 gears, I could go 100mph and pass all of those annoying commuters. I don't know, maybe I'm less likely to kill myself/other people with the 3.55 gears in the rear .

Luckily, I don't do much highway driving anymore.

I'd order the parts from Randy's Ring and Pinion and install them, but in my case I have a friend who's done this before and has all the tools to properly torque the crush sleeve in place, and check for proper pinion depth...it might save you the real headache and farm it out to a good Rear-End shop.

Rearend Specialties in Santa Clara can do this job, also Bayshore Truck in San Jose.
You should call around and get some quotes.
Price the job two ways,:
1) On the bench, where you bring them a "core" rear end to do the gear swap on, then you swap it into the Duster.

2) As a "Drive-in & out" where you leave them the car for a few days and they swap the new gears into your current rear axle assembly.

I would recommend 3.23 gears to swap in. You can still cruise pretty fast on the hwy, but will be more punchy around town. Any higher than that will become annoying.
