Is the reason you can only grind a narrow range of profiles due to (1) the idea that grinding through some hardening layer is involved, or (2) due to the geometry of the core blank? If it's (2), then why not make the core blank lobes bigger and allow more variations? I have no experience here, just trying to learn. I'm very excited about this project, BTW. That's really cool if you guys can get the gear ground on the cam (especially for the non-full-race crowd - like me). Modern technology for the Slant is where it's at, in my book. Lou |

The limitations are because of the hardening process. The cams are close ground to the blank size, then they get hardened and straightened. Because of the cores moving a little during hardening, they need to be trued up. This is done at the finish grind, removeing only enough material to straighten and meet finish specs. There is no way to have only one core for every grind. To make them even close to affordable the cores must have all manufacturing processes, except final grind, done at the same time. |
