I measured an 8 3/4 axle from a '63 Fury as a good fit for a Duster as regards to width. I believe this axle has the 741 housing, but I only want the housing. What is the size of the nut ?

I don't think there is anything unusual about these axles besides the tapered end with big nut. I assume that I can convert this house to the later style flanged axle.

You know, I can't remember why, but there is some reason why you can't use the pumpkin. Maybe the ring gear is odd-sized so there are no afetermarket ratios available. Or maybe the internal spline is different. Is there somebody out there with a better memory?
I don't know about the housing.

It is a 741, I can swap it into another 8 3/4 housing. The 741 has 1-3/8" small stem pinion but that's OK as long as I swap the entire center section. I just don't know whether '65 and up axles would work with this housing ends. The housing looks to be the width for a Duster.

The thrust block in the center is different on these early center sections.
I have never done this conversion but I was told that the axle bearing sizes are different so you can not simply swap in the later flange style axle.

Ahhh, but based upon my conversations with Mosier, there is a way. Mosier will fix you up with the late model ends and a set of axles. BUT you need to use the newer style sure grip diff to get over the problem with the axle splines Doc was talking about.

My combo:
1960 8 3/4" housing
742 pumpkin w/3.91 gears (1964)
Late model Sure grip (1968?)
Mosier housing ends and axles

Buildin a Johnny Cash rear end. It's a 60, 64, 68 model! Looks good on paper, I sure hope this thing will work......
