Hey,

I've owned my Valiant for 16 years, and ever since I remember there has been a leak somewhere. Last year, I decided to address it, and figured it would be an easy fix. I figured wrong.

So, after a new parking cable, full seal kit, 2 speedo cables and of course the pushbutton O rings, here I stand... with a leaking trans. I'm hoping someone can help.

Here's the deal: the last two times I brought it in, it was "fixed" with a new speedo cable. My shop tells me that this is where the leak is coming from. Ok, I say. So I end up with the car for a week or two, and BAM. The leak starts flowing again.

What are they doing wrong? Is there some kind of "splash effect" or internal pump that is continually wrecking the speedo cable seal? I have no idea what this is (clearly they don't either), but if they tell me they have to buy a third speedo cable, I'm going to scream.

There's no way this is the cable alone at this point.

Take the car to a coin operated car wash, bring a jack and some jack stands, jack it up, and clean the transmission housing as best you can. Drive back home, put the car back up on jack stands, and report where the leak is coming from.

There is a small inner seal at the base of the speedo cable, inside the speedo gear itself, if that seal does not do it's job, fluid is "drawn-out" by the turning cable & leaks out the cable housing.
My guess is that this seal was not changed, seeing that it has been discontinued for some time and is hard to find in general.

Thanks for the reply, Doc. Your suggestion makes a ton of sense.

Curious, then. What should I do here? Is there anything similar that can be used? Or am I just SOL on this?

Yep, I discovered that the speedo pinion seal is probably it. It is, however, available at this point through TorqueFlite Patty on Ebay. The pinion seal only comes in a full reseal kit, but I fortunately bought one sometime ago.

Here's the link:
