Just put a 3500 in it and be done. (Shift kit topic split from the converter thread)
Works for me. That'll be my first major performance mod

I wonder if I should put in a B&M shift improver kit and shifter at the same time...

Word is the B&M and the Mopar Perf. shift improver kits are no good, not worth the money. The B&M Traskit (reprogrammer) is OK. The Trans-Go TF-2 is thought to be the best.

Any idea where I can get the Trans-go kit from, and if this is something I should have done professionally?

I haven't had any experience with the kits, yet, but they should be a 'do it yourself' job. I also need to find a Trans-Go source. Summit carries the B&M kits. The reprogrammer kit is twice the money of the shift improver kit ($26 vs $52) but the transmission guys say the reprogrammer is well worth the extra cost. Also consider using a 4.2 second gear apply lever.

Post subject:  Shift Kit Information

There is a lot of information about Trans-go shift kits on the web.
Here is just one of the links I found when I did a Googles search:
(This one has a nice discription and product listing:
http://www.drivetrain.com/transgoshiftkits.html

Looks like it's time to split this thread!

Torqueflites are NOT the same as the A904, correct?

Post subject:  not quite

A904 and A727 are definitely both torqueflites. There may be others that are also classified as torqueflites, but I'm not sure (A999...).

The 904 is much like a 727 but downsized for the smaller motors. No 904s were used in big block cars. There is one part that interchanges, the valve body.

So a reprogrammer for a 727 will still work for a 904 then?

Same kit for both trans. Also whenever you buy a trans filter it comes with 2 gaskets, 1-727, 1-904.

I wondered why it had a second gasket...

Post subject:  B&M vs TransGo

On the topic of B&M vs TransGo, I've used both, and recommend the B&M.

Both of the shift kits offer several levels of performance, ranging from heavy-duty to full race. Heavy duty firms up the shifts so that the transmission slips less when shifting, extending its life. The full-race setups provide extremely harsh shifts.

Stock A904s will shift into second gear at some speed, even if the lever is in the '1' position. These kits have an option to remove this feature, so that the driver can select first gear at any time.

My choice when installing both kits was to go with the medium performance level, which is between simply heavy duty and full race. Shifts are firm, but not excessive. Note that if you drive on ice much, hard shifts will be a big negative, as they will break your tires loose even if you're trying to drive gently. If you plan on a lot of Winter driving, don't go beyond the heavy duty setup.

Why do I prefer the B&M setup? I felt that both kits offered the same performance, and believe that they did almost the same things to the valve body. There were two differences I did notice:

1. TransGo's directions were junk. Sure, they provided a videotape, but you actually HAD to watch portions of the tape because their written directions left out steps and were unclear. If you like zipping forwards and backwards on your VCR while sitting on your couch with tranny fluid on your clothing, go for the TransGo kit! Believe me, you'll be tracking plenty of crud in and out of the garage. B&M provided clearly-written instructions that were unambiguous and made sense.

2. The TransGo kit cost more money.

That's my two cents on the subject!

I think I'll go with the B&M transpak as I originally planned then. I'm just a little concerned that it may cause my spider gears to take a premature crap on me if ya know what I'm sayin. Could I just weld the spiders...instant cheap "spool" effect...lol. No seriously though, would that help to strengthen the rear?
