So, when I fill up I can get some gas spilling out after it shuts off because (I think) the fuel filler line is so flat (angle-wise). Is there any way to avoid this? Stupid question, but I'm sick of spilling gas on the side of the car. |

Two things you can do to prevent the burp as tank gets full. Lift up on pump nozzle while filling to direct flow down bottom of fill pipe, and listen to gurgling as fuel is flowing. By doing this, as fuel fills up the filler tube it will contact the end of the nozzle sooner, and automatically shut off fuel flow. You may also have a plugged air vent passageway that directs air from tank during filling which would cause percolation of fuel back up the filler tube during refueling. It is formed from a metal partition running along top of filler tube. In the old leaded fuel days, pump nozzles were of a larger diameter, and fit into filler pipe differently. This isn’t to say there was no burping of fuel than, but perhaps not so much. |

The leaded-fuel nozzles were only 1/8" larger; they did not prevent the spitback. It's a problem that started the day the first '60 Valiant first needed a fill-up. It got somewhat better in '68 (steeper slope to the fillpipe, and it got a lot better on the catalyst-equippd '75s and '76s (unleaded nozzle restrictor). A retrofit restrictor plate in the fillpipe would help a lot -- the trick is finding one that'll fit. See here. Also see previous thread on the subject here. |
