I have been looking for the proper location of my side view mirrors. 65 Valiant. Most I see are just in front of the wing glass, but some are behind it. Which is the proper location? Thanks

Rick

Sandy,

Does your wing glass flip open past it?

Thanks, Rick

There isn't a proper location. There are two proper locations. One (in front of the vent wing) for 2-doors, and another (behind the front wing) for 4-doors.

Mine are placed at the vent glass post just far enough back so you can see them. The glass still opens, and you can still see it. I will get you a photo tonight. Did you pick up a Mirror? I am pretty sure Advance Auto or Pep Boys is where I got mine.

No not yet. I seen some on E-bay for $ 25-30 pair in a round glass. I need to stop by advance tomorrow anyway so I'lll take a peak there to. Are yours plastic?

I think they are metal. At least the bases are metal. Sorry, it got late too fast today. I will try to get you a photo tomorrow. Yeah, right. That's what he said 6 months ago. I'll try again.

The placement of the mirror on mine is about 1.5 inches back from the vent divider post.

An interesting tidbit I picked up from my reading about aero concerns is that the mirror that sits out from the car a bit disrupts the flow of air around the car less than one that is kind of molded into the side as many were recently.l

Here is that promised photo, Rick. The other side is the same. YOu must buy left and right mirrors for this application. I had to file the base to fit the concave surface. It might fit yours better.

Thanks Sam. I ordered a round one from advance today to see what it looks like. Thanks for the photo.

Rick I had 2 67 4 door darts one built in California one in Michigan.
California car in front of the wing window(had to look through the wing window to see out of it) the Michigan car back so you can see it through the door glass. Lots of other things were different between the two.
My 63 beater Valiant 2 door post was by the wing window(had to look through it) and the wing just cleared it when opening. I moved it back so I can see it through the door glass. Using the factory 2 post mirrors I mounted one on the passanger door too. Can see much better now.

Keep in mind also that until Federal safety standards required side view mirrors, a lot of cars came from the factory without them, and they were then added by the dealership either before or after the vehicle was first sold. So placement on the early cars can vary especially with the non-remote mirrors that were just slapped on wherever.
