Hi guys and Happy Thanksgiving. Is there someone who is able and doing the mod on the oil pumps. I need one done. Does the year and cond matter for this? Thanks. Dean

I probably should not speak up here, since I do not race my slant, but I seldom take my own advice in that matter. However, when I first joined the slant community I received that Slant Six News which had many of the same tech editors as contribute here: Dan, Doc, Joshua, and others.

The advice at that time was to NOT modify the oil pump. Seems it puts unwanted pressure on certain components that then shift and fail. This was brought up and mentioned many, many times. Someone would write in and say they had put a high volume oil pump in and things went bad.

Has this changed? My understanding is, oil pressure is oil pressure. As long as you have, it, things are covered so-to-speak. My stock pump provides 50 psi at 2000 rpm and above. That should be plenty for most applications. I do not race, but the many of the fastest slants out there do not turn high RPMs. So again, high volume seems unnecessary.

You may be working with more recent info than I am, but be careful of this. Please correct me if there is an updated practice.

Sam

Thanks for the input Sam. On the "Frequently asked questions" spot theres some info on drilling out the block for better oil circulation. In particular is drilling the passage out so I think the pump work is just to match the block like port matching intakes to head I'm guessing.

Sam: I think "mod the oil pump" in this context means enlarge, radius, smooth, and "port" the stock type pump, which will tend to reduce the pump drag, not install a high-volume one, which will tend to increase pump drag.

That is a relief.

One modification is mentioned HERE, for lubricating the oil pump drive gear.

Hopefully a few excerpts from my Drag Car build will help you out..
HERE
and
HERE

Hopefully These 2 Links will Help you out a Bit... This Pump has been on 2 motors And 2 seasons of Drag Racing Turning 6200-6500 RPMs for over 100 Passes..

I started out with a beat 1975 Used 6 Bolt standard stock Aluminum Casing Pump, Had the Machine shop Mill the cover flat and Crocus clothed the rotor and Round part around the rotor. Slapped doc's Hardened Gear on there and Bolted it on Ruster

No issues yet. The links have pics in them illustrating what you are asking about. - You will have to scroll down the page to find the block and the pump, but it is smoothed and radiused in there for smooth flow.

Anything you can do to improve flow (reduce restriction(s)) thru all the oil passages is helpful.
You can run less pressure and reduce the load on the OP drive gear when you have improved oil flow to all the bearings.
