Post subject:  Auto to three speed manual swap

Sorry to bother y'all again but I got a few questions regarding a manual tranny swap. I found a guy scrapping out a 72' Duster 225 three speed manual who is willing to sell me anything I want off it. I figured I'd try to swap my '74 Gold Duster over to a manual before the 904 gives up the ghost. Would I need to change out the transmission hump for a three speed? I know it is required for a four speed floor shift, but never heard of it being needed for a three on the tree. Also would it be wise to swap out the 2.76 7 1/4 for something a little lower geared? Thank you for your time and patience.

Is its 3 on the tree or is it a 3 on the floor? (dusters over the years had both options, 3 on the floor would be a bit easier than 3 on the tree).

If it's an original rear for the car the 1972 3 spd car would have a 3.23 rear...but the car will have the SBP...if your
74 has disc brakes then this will not be the best swap at the time.

If determined to go through with a 3 on the tree swap, make sure you check the wiring points on the column, mopar changed the wiring harnesses a bit in 1973, and I have 2 different configurations (early and late) 1974...so you may need to make some electrical changes.

It's a three on the tree, but I got a couple old universal Hurst three speed shifters laying about that I probably could make work on it. Would either a column shift or floor shift require a different transmission hump?

Both cars are four wheel drum, 5x4 small pattern, but I'd like to refrain from swapping rearends if possible because the 2.76 is in immaculate condition. Just not sure about the drivability of the high rearend, especially on take off's.

Thank you

The 3 speed out of my Duster had no place to mount a floor shifter. That trans is probably a non synchro 1st gear.

The column shifter is a constant source of aggrivation. My Duster had 24,800 miles on it when I bought it. It would hang up between 1st and 2nd.
