Slant Six Forum :: stand for laptop

The software I use to tune the fuel injection in my Ford van (and that I will use to tune the injection on the slant in my brother's Duster) has a datalogging feature that you can use to record up to thirteen or so selected parameters and play back after you are done driving. You can save the datalogs as separate files and there is some way to export it all to excel to look at the data in a graph format. I haven't figured out the excel part yet, but datalogging is a great feature. I can just start recording and drive.

Police cars and fire and ambulance rigs usually have a very nice and sturdy laptop stand these ays. The cops around my area are continually getting caught using the laptops in their cars to look at porn while on the job, but you might find one of the nice stands in a junked police vehicle.

Has anybody made a stand to hold their lap top while they cruise and tune? It is very dangerous to drive and watch a laptop in the passenger's seat. This has slowed my tuning process down considerably. I was thinking it would be cool to have a stand to hold the laptop up where I could see it, and the road at the same time. If you have done so, would you post a photo of it, or a description of the device please. Thanks. Sam

In this part of the world you use a 12 yearold boy. He holds the laptop............ and tunes your car faster than you can logon. .....or just get him to drive... Either way you will both dig it.

Good thought on the police cruiser thing. I have never been in one myself, so must take your word for it. I want to feel the change as I make it. I don't know how subtle or evident this will be, but I wish to try. My kids are old enough to have kids (33 and 36), and my oldest grandkid is only six. I am sure a 12 year old would work it better than me if one were around to press into service. Sam

Get someone else to run the laptop while you drive. You wouldn't want to endanger yourself or others on the road, when you get so engrossed in tuning you run off the road or some other sort of stupid action! Richard

Even if someone else is tuning or driving, it would be nice to have a stand for the laptop. I kind of wish there were a smaller format for Mega Squirt, like a palm pilot, or pocket pc. I have an HP pocket pc. Sam

I was into Radio Shack for something else, and noticed they had notebook/netbook stands remaindered for $5. I've wasted far more than that in my life multiple times, so I bought it. This looks like it can be the basis for something that will work. I will need to add folding legs of some kind. Yes you should not tune and drive. Thanks for the excellent advice. But while sitting safe and sound in a parking lot adjusting things, saving the autotune, or saving the file, it would be nice not to have to look completely to the side and tilt your head 30 degrees to match the angle of the laptop sitting on the seat. Also, if you have to hit the brakes, maybe it would keep things all safely where they belong. This is made by Gigaware. It is either part number 03A10, or 2601533, and has a UPC skew of 40293 55447. The floor shifter makes this more complicated. Placing it in the center would obscure the wind shield too much, so placing it off to the side of the shifter slightly will not leave the passenger's seat entirely available as I had originally envisioned. If I was going to do it, I would use my iPad, buy a mount for it, and then use a remote desktop app for Windows laptop. The laptop stays safely in the back seat (or even the trunk) and the iPad easily slips into place when you need it. Takes up 1/4 the volume of the laptop. Go further: Get a cheap used laptop and leave it in the trunk (or under the seat), connected to your Megasquirt 24/7. Then you can tune with the iPad from the front seat, back seat, standing outside the car, etc. Then when they port the Megasquirt tuning to the iPad, you're already set to go! True, but the big display and virtual keyboard on the iPad would come in handy for this work. I think the biggest advantage would be having a 1.3 pound device riding wi you (with a 10 hour battery life), compared to a laptop that weighs 4x that. Then there is the drag racing app that uses the built in accelerometer to calculate ET...

That is all pretty cool. Unfortunately I am a tech dinosaur and do not really understand how this stuff works together. It gives me hope though that something like this can be done. I will look at the links later, and see what I can glean from it. Thanks. Sam
