Post subject:  Truck Driveshaft Question

Well I guess I would post it here as the drivsheft connects the Transmission to the rearend. :-0

I have a 77 Dodge truck 3/4 Ton that I use for towin' and general Junk, Some of you may have seen it at a race this summer..

Well anyway I needed to put a U joint in;(this truck has 3 of them in the driveshaft)
So I replaced all 3 and while I was there I figured I would Put a new carrier Bearing on the driveshaft too.

I was careful to mark the segments of the driveshaft (it's a 2 piece shaft with splines and a slip yoke in the center) and after I installed the new carrier bearing

I now I have a nice harmonic vibration between 40-55 MPH.

The old one had the rubber completely wore out of it so that I was able to just slip the bearing out of the rubber...

The new one the rubber is just supporting the bearing to the housing and frame much more firmly..

When I put the Shafts back on I was sure to clock the shafts with my marks on the back of the tranny and the rear end... I thought I lioned up the slip yoke splines as well - I might be one spline off there.

My question is will the firmer rubber in the bearing support transmit that much vibration through the cab ( I expierinced this with new motor mounts One time) or does the shaft possibly being one spline off cause this?

Thanks for any help,

Greg

One spline off would do it.......

Thanks ed,

I will have to climb under there and adjust it one spline until I get rid of the vibration :-)

The angle of the pinion joint must match the angle of the output shaft universal. If I get the picture right, the center has a slip joint as well, meaning the front and rear can then be off from each other. If they are off, then proper alignment of front and rear becomes impossible, and vibration will result. Ed's short answer was enough. I just couldn't help myself. It is winter now, and I have more indoor time.

Well I did Go and adjust the shaft one spline further than my old marks.. Vibration is still there but noticiably less.. I am going to live with it like this..

My marks were a bit sloppy and when I re-assembled it I had to guess what spline to line things up on.. i guessed wrong... This time the Marks are the same distance off.. just on the other side.

greg, do you have a 3 buck stanley 6" level? try to roll the truck on flat ground to make the rear axle cross 12 and 6 and 3 and 9 o'clock. don't touch truck, but slide up and check trans joint to see if still bubble level like rear. its hard to see if you are off a spline with a 8 foot or longer split truck shaft. ron
