Post subject:  Green Bearing install issues

Anyone know how far the Green bearings need to be pressed on the axle? Is there a measurement? When I went to check everything before final assembly, it seems like the axles are sticking too far out of the housing with the nuts just hand tight. Also the brake drum does not fit properly inside the backing plate. I thinking just need to pull the axle and press the bearing on just a little more. Has anyone had this issue before, or am I missing something? Thanks.[/quote]

The bearings should seat where the stock bearings were.

If you have a Sure Grip unit there is a spacer inside the diff that needs to be removed for green bearings to work or the axles won't seat deep enough.

Will someone please explain how "Green" bearings differ from the stock bearings and why they are used.

Thanks, Bruce

Green bearings are sealed and do not require adjustment. :D

Yeah I will double check the bearings.....not a sure-grip.

"Green" is a company name... the maker of this type of bearing.
This is a sealed ball bearing, not the "tapered roller" bearing like the factory used, that is why the "Green" bearings do not need end play adjustment.
Most people use them because they are "cheap & easy", compaired to the factory set-up.

I am removing the suregrip from a 742 with 4.57 gears. The Suregrip will be replaced with a Spool. Do I need to replace the tapered axle bearings with Green bearings??

Thanks, I'm slowly learning more about race Slant6s.

Took a close look and answered my own question.

Yes, I do need "Green" type bearings because the spool will not allow for axle end play control, which is needed with tapered roller bearings.

"Green" bearings, with snap rings control axle end play.

Sounds right to me.

Are you running aftermarket axles Bruce? They will be needed to be legal with a spool.
