Hi all, after 6 years my car is finally ready it's a 62 valiant,auto with hyper pak.
I'm having trouble starting the car initially, it seems like it floods, floats are checked and I'm using small jets, it's a edelbrock 500.
Once the car starts and warms up it turns off and starts up fine.
Other factors are engle kv1cam, timing is set at 18 deg btdc, msd 6al, mopar dissy,high comp, NGk plugs bp5ey, premium 98 gas.

Any help is appreciated,

What is your starting procedure?What is your idle set at? One or two pumps of the pedal and then crank? I have no personal experience with a hyper pak manifold,but a few members on here do,so im sure they will chime in shortly.

If your outside temp is under 42 degrees getting the engine to light off can be ugly...when the engine (and intake) is cold it needs something akin to being rich about 120-135% over normal operating stoich for the short ram...the bad part is this puts the whole thing right on the edge of being 'too rich' and then it feels as if it floods (I remote started mine one winter after smelling it was too rich, then popping open the secondary on the holley a bit and blowing into the venturies to get more air in the big plenum on the normally 'closed' side...). The problem is the long intake doesn't allow much gas from the pump shot when the choke plate kicks 'shut'(almost shut actually), and it leaves a big pool of gas on the floor of the plenum, with not much being drawn into the cylinders.

I had to do some trial and error to come up with a choke setting and duration that seemed to work best for the situation. The only 'working' strategy that I know if is setting the carb up with the secondaries outboard (against the driver's side fender), and cracking them open a bit so during start up and fuel puddling, there is some air being swept from the end of the plenum past the primaries and the pump shot to help atomize some of the gas...after that setting the fast idle to be in the 1400-1600 rpm band then having the next 'kickdown' stop be at 1000rpm helps keep it motivated until it fully warms up. At the time I was not running as deep of a cam as you are so there will be some finesse involved here, I'm sure. (I only ran 14BTDC with a custom curve out of a super six distributor). Are you running a MP distributor with different springs for street use, instead of the "all in by 800 rpm" springs it came with?

Running some kind of intake heating system helps when it lights off and during cold weather driving, but not much help there for starting.

One thing is for sure that I don't have outside ambiant temp problems, it was 104 deg today and is still 82 at 9.30 pm! I normally give it a half pump and start cranking but no go, after a few attempts i take off the air cleaner pull the choke back and a few more cranks then eventually once it starts, then I pull the choke cable to keep more to get the revs up so she can warm up. I'm using the original hp bracket and choke cable set up with a 2948 carter afb air horn, im aslo running the carb east west like the orig hp were. I dont know if it's a mp dissy all I know that it's a stock electronic dissy, I would like to recure it tho so I can get the most out of my engine. This I'm sure isnt going to be any easy fix for me but I'm sure it's going to be a lot of trial and error and swearing. I'll post some pics soon

Still stuck here fellas she won't start at all. One thing I did I made sure that the intake was dry from fuel then I then reinstalled the carb with fuel in it ready to go. With no pump on the carb and quite a bit of cranking of the motor I then checked the intake plenum and there behold was fuel!! Should fuel be there with no fuel being pumped? I have spark, new spark plugs, the disy is in the right spot, timing should be ok can't work it out because when I started the engine for the first time to run the cam in I had no issue starting the engine, literley 2 pumps crank it and it started. And suggestions welcome
