Greetings all,

My son has been driving our 3 speed Valiant and it needs a trans overhaul. Years ago I did the trans on my Mustang and I was able to buy a "master" kit from a local shop that included all the bearings, syncro rings, gaskets, etc.
Is such a kit available for the '66 3 speed?

I'm also considering a 833 OD, but I'm still looking for one of those and the associated parts. Any leads on a kit or 4 speed would be much appreciated!

Hans

Of course you can,if you've rebuilt other brands of transmissions, then you'll find the 904 is much simpler. Just bear in mind Chrysler transmissions went through ALOT of changes from 1965-1967, obtaining all the correct parts the first time will take luck. You can buy rebuild kits from mail order places, try googling torqueflight Patty in washington state.

The 3 speed box is crappy enough to make one wonder if the money could be better spent in other ways,

It cost me less to put a 5 speed in my 65 Valaint than rebuilding the 3 speed.

Im not sure the parts are even available.

What did you use for the 5 spd? Did it bolt up? Any info would be appreciated as my 3 spd needs synchronizers.

You can get the parts to fix your 3 speed, but it might be better, and cheaper to pick up a good used one. Try to find one of the later ones that is fully synchronized. Another option is to put a factory 4 speed in. Thus would require the new floor profile, and a new bell housing. But all the other stuff would be similar. Your clutch mechanism and throwout bearing set up will work for the 4 speed. You may need to have a new drive shaft made, which can be done easily enough by a major, regional truck repair facility. In my area the company that provides this service is NVS, or Northern Virginia Supply.

Years ago,(maybe 8 or so) McCleod was working on a modular bell housing system to put any transmission behind any motor. That is the clutch company out in California. Try to contact them and see if they ever finished this project, and if they did if they make the parts to put a Mustang 5 speed behind your slant. It is a pretty big project, any way you cut it. If you put a 4 speed or 5 speed in, you will need to change the profile of the floor to accommodate the floor shifter. The gentleman I talked to about this at the time was named "Red". That was all I knew him by. He worked only on Thursdays as a consultant, so may be retired by now.

Good luck on that.
