Post subject:  In Midst Of Engine Rebuild - Head is "Junk"?

As per subject. The machine shop is saying that the head is not very usable and is in fact junk. I am wondering if there is a good place to source a 1969 and above head because I imagine that locally it is going to be difficult for this guy to find one that is usable.

I just know that from experience Southern California seems to be a crappy place to get slant six parts in general. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place to get a good cylinder head from. I am beginning to worry that I am going to end up in a bad situation with a rebuilt block and no ability to get a head. And yes, there is no pun intended. :P

Wow, a few years ago, SoCal was about the best place on planet earth to get Slant parts. There must be some around still. Pick a (your?) Part or Memory Lane in Sun Valley, or there's another really cheap pick your own near there? Any head up to 1987 will work fine for you (Diplomats, Aspens, trucks, vans...). I went to a few Ecology Auto Wrecking yards too, around SoCal.

Or, hopefully someone on here has one laying around...

Im not sure if you ever go to junk yards, but there are a ton in San Diego. Start calling around, lots of slant six stuff out there(I just moved to Tx from Vista last year) If not, post a wanted ad on here or at forabodiesonly.com you will find one in no time.

WHat exactly makes the head you gave them "junk"?

Hey raPOM,

Alright, any tips for good yards? I may be susceptible to the "no phone book" problems that come with the new Internet age.

Saw the head. It had a couple crack repairs. It also had oversized "soft" valve seats that were plunged deep into the head. It also had giant valve guides that were about one one hundred mile trip from plunging into the water jacket.

He said he was surprised the engine ran at all! The block was fine, but he mentioned that pretty much every valve was blown on the thing. No vacuum, no life.

I am cheap so I would always go to ecology in oceanside. There is an ecology down south too,in chula vista I think. Of coarse you have a phone book,Google. Just type in your zip and put junk yard,or salvage yard,or auto salvage etc... and it will bring up some places for you to call.

I have got a few heads at the house. I am up in Crestline, near San Bernardino and Redlands area.

Let me know if you want one. I will be reasonably priced.
