Looking for advice. My 87 D100 has a rebuilt engine in it that has about 100,000 miles on it. I think it was one of those big box rebuilds,but it still runs good and has 125 psi across the board. Sometimes when I first start it up one or more of the lifters get a little noisy,which usually goes away after warm up. I got some new clevite lifters for christmas that I was going to use when I did a cam swap,but I have decided to convert to a solid cam/lifter set up when I eventually do a cam swap.My question is this: Do you think it would be beneficial for me to swap these new lifters in? I dont really have a use for them otherwise,and since they were a gift I dont want to sell them. Any down side to doing this? If you think its a good idea,how should I go about changing them out? Should I let them soak in oil,install them,start and run the motor at 2-2500 for 15 to 20 mins,then change the oil and filter like when running in a new motor? Thanks for any input. |

If your going to swap the cam out fairly soon, I wouldn't. The only cam they could be used on without having them ground after running them would be the one your taking out. Save them for your next hydraulic build. Other than that, Cam run-in looks good, but go the full 20 minutes. CJ |

CJ- Thank you for your input. The cam/head swap at the earliest will be late summer,to early winter this year (I hope) and I put about 1,000-1500 miles on it a month. |

Also,I have read somewhere about using hydro lifters on a solid cam. Are there any benifits/drawbacks to this? |

I wouldn't. Solid cam lobe is designed with lash take-up ramps; hydro cam doesn't. So you'll have problems if you try mix parts (valves will start to open sooner than designed.) |
