| Post subject: | Exhaust smoke at high speed? |
Hi. Quick back story. So I have a 64 dart gt with a 225 slant six, 4 bbl 390 Holley. Automatic. Just had the carb rebuilt, new fuel pump, valve cover gasket, fuel lines blown out. It had been sitting for about 5 years before I got my mitts on it. Also previous owner had warped the head so he put a new one on. So today I was driving on the freeway and when I hit about 50+ mph a lot of smoke started coming out of the exhaust and filling up the car with smoke as well. I got off the freeway and it stopped. But when I would get back up to that speed it would start again. What would cause this? I'm used to a lot of smoke at low speeds but never at high speeds. Also filling up the car made me think it was an exhaust leak. Making me all sleepy. So yeah. Any ideas? White smoke I believe too. |

Make sure it's actually coming through (and out) the exhaust pipe. Could easily be an oil or transmission fluid leak that happens to blow onto the hot exhaust above a certain road speed, causing the car to put out a James Bond smoke screen, some of which will also get into the car through the inevitable holes (and depending where the leak is, also past the rotten hood-to-cowl seal). If you are "used to lots of smoke at low speeds", something's the matter. |

im actually not getting too much smoke at slow speeds. the inevitable start up smoke, and i was driving it around after i posted this and would let it get to low idle and put the petal to the floor and i would get a plume of smoke. first time it was black and every other time it was white/blue-ish. i do know the smoke coming out when i was on the freeway was actually coming from the exhaust. the smoke filling up the car tho i have no idea where it was coming from. if it was coming from the transmission leak how would i track it down? or i guess the best steps to track it down. and also slantsixdan out of curiosity whats in your garage? |
