Hello Problem Solvers.. Heres One for ya.. I have a noisy speedometer gear in both my 73 Cuda and the 79 Volare.. The needles work fine registering speed, and the Odometer also works fine registering mileage.. THey are noisy.. Should I grease the cable First??? I think the problem is in the speedometer head itself and I am not afaraid to tear into it.. I just dont want to spray any old wd 40 stuff in there and possibly damage it.. ALso I would rather attempt this repair instead of sending to to bob's speedometer for more $$.. Thanks for any help. Greg |

Greg the speedo on my 83 D-150 was noisy, but the needle was also jumpy, I lubed the cable, took it loose at the speedo and tranny connections, flushed it good, has been fine for a while now. John |

My speedometer was also making kind of a grinding/buzzing noise, different from the noise that a dry cable makes. I don't know about a '73 or '79, but my '67 had a lubrication port on the back of the speedometer head. I put a few drops of light machine oil here, and it took care of it:

Thanks guys.. When Time allows I will be doing some speedo service.. I think the guts of mine are all plastic without any lube ports :-0 Greg |

I've fixed some speedometers, but usually the noise came from the cable, not the speedometer itself. |

As an FYI... The best cable lube for a speedo cable is powdered graphite. Seems like any petroleum based lube either runs-out or gets "gummy" over time, causing future problems. To do the job "right", disconnect the cable from both ends, pull-out the cable and clean in solvent, then dry it completely. Spray carb or brake clean thru the empty housing to clean it out. (pushing a used cable thru, while spraying, helps remove any dried-up grease) Coat the cable with powdered graphite and re-install, pour graphite into the housing, as you feed-in the cable. It is a good idea to change the seal at the trans end (speedo gear to cable seal) to prevent trans oil from getting into the housing and mixing w/ the graphite. DD. |
