Post subject:  Thinking about "tow hubs" again...
After my seedy towing operation last weekend (GodsRods Duster II towed on a car dolly backwards :shock: ) I've been contemplating other low cost options to get the car to the track.

Charlie S. had mentioned several years ago that "tow hubs" used to be a fairly common method of towing back in the 70's. You don't see them very often anymore, so I'm thinking about going to my local trailer builder and asking him if he would be willing to weld me up a set of tow hubs.

Simple flat towing is not a good option because of the spool. Swapping rear wheels at the track is roughly the same effort as pulling the driveshaft anyway.

Hey Cookie! This might be a good option for you too. You want that period correct vibe for the Piggie and flat towing was the way it was done back then.

Tow hubs will let you flat tow with a spool...
But who in their "right mind" wants to flat tow anyway?? :roll: :wink: :shock:

Would the Mountie "haul you to jail" or would he simply "cite" you... and make you disconnect & leave the towed vehicle on the roadside? (or impound it?)

Remind my pee brain. Why is flat towing so bad with a full sized truck towing a 2600-3000# car? Is it mainly the the braking distance? Obviously motor homes of all sizes are flat towing every day.

I'm just gonna have these things made and tow to some races... :D

My limited understanding is that, Yes, the braking distance is the main concern here.

Others have mentioned the potential for disaster if/when the towed vehicle has a blow out on the front tire. :shock:

Doc posted pictures of the carnage when his Barracuda (and minivan) were totalled because of this.

A couple people thought I was crazy (okay, maybe more like an idiot) when I used Frank's car trailer with no trailer brakes. :shock:

That was probably not the smartest thing I could have done (shut up Cookie! :P ).

I had trailer brakes added with the repairs though. :wink:

Here, If it has wheels on the road it must have plates and insurance.

Anything towed over 3500lbs must have brakes.

You would get a minimum of $1000 fines for no insurance and plates.

If you were in an accident you could lose your licence for 30 days and have your vehicle impounded on the spot.

You can get a $300 fine for having mud fall off yer bogger on the way home.

That being said I tow a 2400lb bogger on a 1500 lb trailer with my Roadmaster at 65/75mph..... the trailer is a tandem axle with 2 3500lb axles and big brakes. The whole rig stops faster than the car by itself.....this is good in the land of 10 miles of 10% grades and 13% ferry ramps.

They are serious about vehicles here....so for $30 you can get a permit to haul 110 ft power poles on a log truck. You just have to do it right .

Rick: It depends entirely on grades. A 3000# race car would quickly burn out the brakes on a 1/2ton pickup around here.

Do yourself a huge favor if you're going to race a lot. Stick to your trailer with brakes. You'll be amazed at how much better it makes the trip.

I know Lou used a dolly quite a bit, but he ain't right in the head to start with. :lol:

Yeah, we did the dolly thing with GodsRods Duster I. It's a bit cumbersome, but doable.

Now that I've got a spool the dolly thing don't work so good. :lol:

I can't afford a trailer right now, so...

I'm gonna go with tow hubs fer awhile. :lol:

Rob, you could always just drive your race car to the track,done that before will slicks and open headers. You in the South now son, its Ok in most places down here :lol:
