Hey guys.....I picked up the March issue of Mopar Muscle, and they've got the first installment of a multi-part article on an aluminum block slant buildup. The writer is claiming a 1hp/ci goal. I can't help but wonder if Doug has anything to do with this.

Well, don't get too antsy, Doc. The first installment consists of mostly a historical rundown and what to look for in the block. We'll have to wait for next month to see where it goes.

Yea, this month was mostly history. It’s a pretty good write up of the Slant history.

Next month (or article) they are supposed to get into the buildup.

They did say that you can get the head gasket from www.slantsix.org

Was this engine build done using the BEST high quality parts for the job, or were corners cut to save a few bucks here and there? Nitrous?

The Aluminum build-up is the exact same combo of parts as the first HRM "Slantsixness" cast iron engine. The only difference being that the Alm. engine was bored to 3.440 (.040 o/s) but the iron block went out to .060 o/s. (3.460)
The head, manifold, carb, headders etc were all swapped over from the other engine. They want to see if the Alm. Block alone helps H.P. in any way.

I can answer that question - NO. The aluminum block will save weight but will not make more power. With such things as the open deck design and thinner cylinder walls, I would rather have an iron block for a high power Slant buildup.

At the very least, I'd have improved the head work with bigger valves and more porting, and installed a better (Ultradyne) cam.

I have been thinking lately of doing an aluminum motor for my road race car. If I could make the same power as my iron motor (say 250 at crank), but save 70 lbs, that would be worth a lot in handling on my already light car. Based on Wilford Day's experience and others, it seems the alum engine would be great up to 250-275 HP or so.
