Bored 0.30" over
268 Mech Cam
Clifford Intake & Headers
500 CFM Edelbrock 1404
MSD-6201
MSD-8207

The bay is much cleaner now, the engine is in the truck, and I've been working on cleaning up the cab (had some surface rust under the floor mats due to a leaky rear window seal).

Should be finished and on the road by the end of this weekend.

More pictures to come.

Post subject:  Update!

She's on the road somethin' fierce. I had the exhaust done up fancy. X crossover pipe, Super 40s, and dump outs. The shop welded my headers to my exhaust, so if I ever want to replace my starter I'm boned, but hey, it looks clean. I'll post some photos some time after next friday.

Drove it from Bremerton, Washington to San Diego, California about a month ago in two days. 350 miles the first day, 900 the second. She ran great, with zero problems. The engine didn't even notice the pass, no overheating issues running through the grapevine, and, what I suspect is due to running an Edelbrock 500, I averaged about 15mpg. I plan to replace the edelbrock with something in the 350-400 range. I would like to stay with a 4bbl, but a demon 2bbl looks appealing. Thoughts?

She is now getting body work, new paint, and a spray in bed liner. Next on the schedule is a fresh interior.

The 350 Holley is a pretty good setup, but I don't know that your fuel economy will be markedly better.

The 390 Holley 4bbl with vacuum secondaries gave me the best economy, but I didn't test in a truck. Not that the Hooptie is terribly aerodynamic. You've got a brick, so speed will play a huge factor. With stock compression, the 390 will deliver about the best mix I've found.

It's not a bolt on and go situation. Jets, power valve, pump cam, shooters and possibly secondary metering plate replacement will be needed. The secondary vacuum spring will need to be addressed as well.

I took the hit on fuel economy going to the Carter because it was easier to keep in tune across a variety of air conditions. It's just easier to keep the mixture control right with changing air temperatures and altitudes. Still, the 390 was pretty solid. Just not big enough for the stroker engine with big compression.

Loved the edelbrock for that bolt on status. And don't get me wrong, 15 is way better than the 11 that I was getting before I did the entire rebuild. Thanks for hittin' me with the knowledge, Ceej.

You might consider the Holley 4360, but useable carbs are getting hard to come by. 450 CFM, spread bore, but the secondaries are barely bigger than the primaries. It was an economy carb introduced in the 70s as part of the Economaster line of carbs. It is a good carb if you can find one used in good shape.

Now there's an idea. The Quadrajet may give you a better situation.

They were used on 318's for a while. I have one, but haven't put it to use on the Race motor, primarily because I don't street drive enough. The primary is very small, while the secondary is Gynormous. Since the secondary is controlled by air flow.

As far as economy is concerned, the Rochester is probably one of the best choices around. Metering based on throttle setting, and exceptionally small primary venturis. When power is needed, it uses an air door.

I really need to get something put together to test the one I have on. Properly set up, it should be capable of 17:1 high vacuum cruise mixtures with the multi-step metering rods. I've seen the Quadrajet do that on different applications, and when you really put the boots too it, ample rich mixture for acceleration. Good carburetor.

I've never been fond of the spread-bore Holley.

Post subject:  Fresh paint

I really, really wish I had taken more "before" pictures. I had a grip of body work done, new paint, and a white bedliner sprayed in.

Before, complete with craptastic canopy that came with the truck.

Next up, a new power steering pump (getting out of the 6th floor of the parking garage without one sucks), new suspension, upholstery, wheels, and finally - pinstriping.
