Disassembly of the A-833 OD is pretty straight forward, but you want to keep all your peices in an organized manner so you can return them to the correct places on reassembly. Also, get the service manual or a Manual Tranny rebuild book, if you don't have the diagrams to go by you will have a large pile of parts and lots of frustration. To get the main assembly out: 1)Drain tranny, remove from car/truck/Van 2)Place on bench, place tranny in neutral and remove the shifter, rods, and levers (tag as necessary) 3)remove side cover plate, check for damage 4)Pull the bolts off the tailshaft that connect it to the main casing. 5)rotate the tailshaft until you see the plug in the back of the casing. 6)line up one set of holes and insert a bolt so you have a free shot at the plug without it swinging back into place. 7)Some people differ on this next step, for me I just: Take a drill and drill a hole in the plug large enough to get a nice sized punch in there. 9)Remove countershaft. 10)The countershaft gearset will now drop the bottom of the casing about another inch which should allow you to pull the mainshaft/tailshaft assembly out the back (support from the inside so you don't 'ding' anything. At this point if you removed the front bearing retainer the input shaft should wobble out the front with a little persuasion. and you can pull the countershaft gear cluster out the side (don't loose any of the needle/roll bearings, and brass spacers unless you are buying a rebuild kit to replace them....) Good luck, it's a nice simple tranny, but if you replace the gears on the mainshaft or any of the pressed on bearings you'll need to find a friend with a press and a quality set of snap ring pliers... -D.Idiot Been there, done that twice....THANKS TO DOC'S HELP!!!!!! |

Hey Thanks D.I. I'm havent gone back out yet but i've hit the point of no-return because i broke the gasket beween, the tailshaft and the transmission so it'll leak if i just give up on it. I havent been able to pull the input shaft off b/c of snap rings Justin |

The sad part about the alumionum cased A-833 is warpage is a major issue, some of the local mopar guys all have had to silicone their OD tranny instead of using the kit since the coverplate no longer sits flat on the case after the first removal. All three that I have leak in various places, and the one I'm driving on now, is 'gooped' instead of using gaskets and I have'nt seen any 90WT sneaking out of it yet... -D.Idiot |

It's been quite awhile, so I am dragging this from the nether reaches of my brain. To get the tailshaft hsg off, you take off the little cover plate on the botm of the hsg, and reach in there with an internal expanding snap ring pliers(Sears use to sell them), and expand the ring that is in the groove of the OD of the caged ball brg. I think it's similar, if not identical to an automatic. Oh yeah, pull the speedo gear before you do all that. |

You're correct on pulling the snag ring out of the bearing detent, but the operation is much easier done if you just pull the whole mainshaft/tailshaft assembly... -D.Idiot |
