Post subject:  aluminum 4 speed case

i know this has been touched on before as i remember reading/posting on the thread but i can't seem to find it. so here we go again!
can an aluminum od case be substituted for the iron one in a b+t tranny? i assume the tailshafts aren't interchangeable but i would like to shave some weight wherever possible.
also, can anybody tell me if the splines on the b+t companion flange the same on 904s and the 4 speeds?

thanks!

It is possible to use the Alm OD main case with the B&T gear set but doing this sets-off a big "chain reaction" of parts swapping
This is because the OD case uses the bigger #308 front bearing, that means you need the bigger bearing retainer "collar", then the bellhousing needs to be swapped or reworked, maybe the bellcrank bracket needs relocating.....you get the idea.

As for the rear flange, the 833 4-speed uses a different one, it has a seal surface machined into it, the 904 and 945 3-speeds have the seal riding on the shaft, not the flange so there is no sealing surface on those.

so doug,
is there any flange you know of that can be swapped onto the 4 spd to adapt a modern universal joint? i have a modified driveshaft that uses a slip collar from a 4x4 (jeep or something) and a universal joint, now the companion flange i have on my 904 won't work in the swap. what to do?
thanks!
