| Post subject: | Gas tank cleaning |
Hi there, I need to clean my gas tank and seal it before I set up my TBI. What is the general consensus / protocol? I am thinking about draining it and spraying it with my pressure washer. Should I use heat or steam? After it dries I will apply a sealer. Is this the best way of cleaning? I also need to clean the filler neck and fuel lines. What should I do?? Cheers, BT |

I cleaned my old one out, and found an amazing amount of crud caked inside. After an initial high-pressure spray (wear goggles, please) I put assorted hardware - lenghts of chains, nuts, etc - inside, taped the holes, and rolled the tank all over the yard. That knocked a lot more crud loose. Rinse, repeat. That solved one problem, but eventually I had to replace the tank. |

Replacing the tank is a great idea. Are there any recommended vendors. I also entertained the idea of a fuel cell. It would be clean and never donate half a liter of fuel to the atmosphere and paint when I fill up. The 1 drawback of the '62 A-body... However this is not a race only car. It will also be a semi-daily driver and I will make occasional deliveries with it. I hate to sacrifice cargo capacity. BT |

I put a length of chain in mine but I can't remember what kind of soap I used. It all depends on your tank's condition. Some people use crazy chemical mixtures but I don't think I had to get too crazy with mine. It had varnished gas that had been sitting for a few years but it cleaned right up fairly easily. I would fix yours before buying a new one. Nothing beats original parts. When I replace an original part on my car with newer parts, it's always a disappointment to see how cheap it is compared to the original. It might look shiny and new but it wont work as well as long as your old one is in good condition. |
