| Post subject: | little oil leak during run in... |
motor and tranny is installed in the 83 D-150 chasse,, started it yesterday to run in the cam after the engine was shut off, noticed a spot of oil on the floor, towards the motor rear,, and a little drop of oil on the bottom rear cover weep hole. Wiped it clean,, restarted the motor,, nothing leaking when it is running, shut it off,, same thing as the engine cools, there are a few drops out of the weep hole. End up with a spot on the floor about the size of a .50 piece. I took the lower cover off,, the pressure plate cover is dry,, but the inside of the flywheel housing feels like it has a fine mist of oil on it.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@N ... 012583922/ any ideas,, maybe the rear seal is seeping some? if so do these tend to wear in and seal better? Or is it down hill from here. I don't want to tear the bottom end apart again,, but it will never be easier than now.. One thing I do remember about the rear seal interface with the crank.. the motor is a 83 cast crank, but am using an early 76-77 heavy cast crank. On the 83 the journal surface where the seal rides is smooth, on the 76-77 crank there is a very light diamond shaped cross hatch pattern, anyone ever notice that cross hatch pattern? any ideas ? |

DT, i had my crank polished smooth in the seal area as i had seen this recommended if using the lip style seal, as recommended on the forum. i am sure someone will correct me if i am mistaken on this. what a revoltin' development!! besides the leak, how's it running? andy. |

Schweeet! I have seen a leak like that be from the rear of the valve cover too. A Slant is like a good Harley. If it ain't leaking it's empty. |
