seems like some myth about mpg up to 36 mpg ? ? ?
i'm finding, any 1st had drivers have real mpg info..

$5 gas can't be far...

My dad got 30-32 mpg highway driving flat I-5 55 miles each way from Portland to Salem 6 days a week, when his was brand new.

With a tired hi-miler motor and a somewhat rusty hulk when I bought what is now the Hyperpak duster, I got 28 mpg 90% highway driving.

This all assumes that everything works and is in tune, the car has the A-833OD option, and you can live with acceleration that is slower than a Prius on Battery only mode.

Not if you are comparing it to the 42.7 mpg Honda Hybrid, or the 51 mpg 1986 Honda 5 spd manual Civic, or other beer cans like the Aveo/etc...

You can get more out of your slant six, but aerodynamics, weight, and engineering the system with max spark advance and max EGR is going a bit far afield.

hi sl6 sages- wow discussions here about feather dusters and dart lites are getting few and far between. have had my 76 feather since 89. it has the od , 225 and the 2.9 axle. this would give an amazing high final drive ratio of 2.15. DI has the correct figures. mine got 31 consistently on the highway and 23 in town. my current 92 volvo 240 wagon with 5spd od and 4 cyl. gets 25/32 mpg, almost the same as the feather. would have to consider the feather a genuine economy car even by recent standards. the feather was epa rated at 36 highway. never saw one that actually got that number but truth is that very few of the cars from that era actually got the stated epa mileage. you old fuds from then will remember the disclaimer in those ads, "your actual mileage may vary." luckily today car manufacturers do not lie. paladin

The article in the fine print shows that the study has 'weighted' results, looking closer they have averaged in SUV's into the mix...so yeah, it will
take about 5 Aveo's on highway mileage to get one Chevy Suburban out of the 16-18mpg rut at 65 mph...to make 24 mpg "average"...my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L will get about 18 mpg average (80% city), but in the 90% highway scenario it will get 20-21 mpg...

The feather duster is going to look real good if put next to say a Dodge Challenger with the Hemi strickly highway...but if I had to pass a truck on I-5 the Chally will get the job done, the Feather Duster will need about 5 miles to get up to 80 for the quick 'get around'.

The study doesn't even give the margin of error either, when compiling statistics they have a range of + or- a percent if this was 10% for this study based on actual driving conditions the sweet spot could be 21.6 mpg, or 26.5 mpg...

My '93 Corolla with non ethanol 87 9lb gas got 38.7 last tank. Automatic. Why would I want to buy a hybrid?

None is called for in a study of this nature. This isn't a poll or anything like that; there is no margin of error. It's a simple weighted mean of averages: how many of each vehicle sold is known (plus or minus nothing), which makes it easy to sales-weight the figure to account for the relative presence of the various vehicles in the on-road fleet. Their rated fuel economy is known, and this study uses the city/highway average, which is now more accurate than ever with the recent changes to the rating system. At the scale being examined it doesn't matter if this particular owner drives that particular vehicle only on the highway or that particular owner drives this particular vehicle only in the city. The 24.1mpg number is cromulent.

(And, the Sivak-Schoettle team at UMTRI are very highly regarded as unbelievably hardnosed sticklers for precision, accuracy, and procedural rectitude).

IIRC, when they came out A bodies were considered compact cars. They are now bigger than 2/3 of the cars on the road.

Federal regulations, what can you say...

30-35 mpg on a good running /6 is accurate for sure but thats driving like a normal person, like anything the more you put you foot in it they will drink it up.
