Post subject:  odometer re-setting
this is probably illegal in the Continental US and the Common Wealths of Kentucky and Canada,, but any ideas on re setting odometers?

not planning on ever selling the 83 D-150,, so,,while awaiting the return of the truck body from Kenny's Body Shop( this old D truck must be the thing to see in Mooresville IN,, I believe that Kenny is planning on putting it on permanent display in his shop,, seems that folks come all over Morgan County Indiana to see the 83 D-150, then leave their personal vehicles for body repair at Kenny's shop... must be a local thing..I plan to be asking for a cut of the action..

back to the subject, I disassembled the 1992 odometer that I plan to use,
found that I can roll the drum forward,, chucked the drum up, using a couple of grommets for couplings,, at high speed in an electric drill will take a long time to roll back to zero miles,, any ideas here?
Can the drum be rolled back??

I do know there is a way to do this but am uncertain how it is done... Looks like sense you have the meter out it would be easy to set the no's where you want, but I have never taken one apart like is shown... I am thinking there is a small 'catch' of some kind that you can dis-engage to spin the no's where you want... In Texas it is illegal to run them 'back' and probably for all states, but also in texas there is an 'exempt' clause for title work.. just have to check a box that states something to the effect that the milage is exempt due to it being past the mechanical abilities of the odo... (5 digits plaus the tenths) that said you could set the D's to all 0's plus a few tenths and check the box, which in essence states that mileage is 'probably' over 100k but unknown due to the 99,999.9 limitations of the meter... Sorry no real help tho... :?

The electric drill method works, you can also gingerly remove the drum from the bracket and resequence the numbers in groups. I've done this on the Hpak duster so I could start with a 'clean slate' for tracking mileage. It's illegal to do so in the PacNW, but if the ODO only goes to 99999, then DMV makes you check the box on the car that says "in excess of mechanical limits of odometer", so it's not like you're rolling back 350,000 miles on the car... :roll:

I have the drum out of the speedo,, it seems that I can only advance the numbers in the normal operating sequence,,,maybe I need to separate the number rolls,,

I've had a couple of speedos rebuilt at Denver Speedometer per SSDan's recommendation. They set my odometer to whatever I asked for.

If anyone asks about the milage be honest and tell them it is XXX miles more than odometer shows.

certainly any reasonable person would believe that the 1983 D-150 has zero actual miles on it,, and has only been titled twice.. :lol:

That's DeLuxe Speedometer, which is in Denver.

Well, a friend of mine's dad had a Ferrari 250 GT California, and to get rid of the mileage from a joyride he took with some friends, he raised the rearend on jackstands, threw it in reverse, and put a brick on the gas pedal...

No, wait, maybe that was a movie...

Oh well, that didn't work out for him anyway. :wink:

I called deluxe,, they quoted 45.00 + shipping, to re set the odometer.

the guy on the phone mentioned they had a water pipe break over the weekend and the shop is a mess,,

In the time this thread has been up you probably could have had it ran "back" with the drill...lol :wink: :wink: :wink: Just sayin...

I don't know about other states, but CA has a box you check on the title that states the odometer miles are not correct. I'm guessing it's legal to do as long as that box is checked.
