I guess I'm "jumping the gun" here. I sent in an application, but have not had a response yet. I somehow got here so I'll ask a question, and if I am doing the right thing I can even send a donation once my membership has been confirmed. I'll leave this question here, but if it is not appropriate on this board I'll try again once I get membership. Here is my idea: Slant Six Questions Thank you for letting me join this fine group. I will try to keep this as short as possible. My son has a (we think) 51 4WD Willys station wagon, which is in rough condition, but can be restored. My son does not want a hot rod; he wants this vehicle for rough mountain roads and offroading. It is to be used as a hunting/fishing vehicle in the high country, I suggested a slant six or a straight six. He loved the idea of the Slant 6—I guess everyone who knows about them does. My first problem is will the slant 6 motor and transmission fit in the Willys? Also, 1. What modifications can we make to the Slant 6 while we are rebuilding it to get the most torque from it? 2. What transmission would be best to use? Auto or something like a Ford 435? 3. Any overdrive available? 4. Do we need to change the rear end; if so, what? Dana 44; Ford 9 inch? ?????? 5. What gear ratio in the differential would be best with what tires? I would very much appreciate any help those of you with experience can give. Not necessarily experience putting the Slant 6 in a Willys, but experience working with Slant 6 rebuilds and installations, and matching transmissions. Thank you again, Ross |
