Should I drop the block in a tub of acid? Or clean it with diesel and degreaser and a brush? I'm interested In what you guys use to get your block, head etc like new. Thanks |

Hey Mr. B,For what is this cleaning a preparation? Are you going to completely rebuild the Engine? Or is this just for cosmetic purposes? Quote: I'm interested In what you guys use to get your block, head etc like new. Thanks
If you're just going to take the Engine apart, clean the parts, paint them, and then re-assemble them, there are cleaners like GUNK and Chemtool, CRC Industrial Super Degreaser, Brakleen and etc. Almost any solvent (Mineral Spirits (paint thinner), Lacquer Thinner, Xylol, Acetone), will be helpful. There are also paint strippers. But if you are going to rebuild the Engine, and are having a machine shop work on the parts, the machine shop usually boils out, or ultra-sound cleans the items on which they work. Spiffing up parts like Air Cleaners, Valve Covers, Oil Pans, Starters, Fans, Pulleys, and etc. can be done with some of the various Abrasive Wheels available from Auto Parts Stores such as AutoZone. Also, there is a pretty good variety of Brushes available. From Tooth Brushes to metal (steel, brass, copper) Wire Brushes. One can also use Abrasive Pads such as ScotchBright. And don't forget the various grades of Steel Wool. HTH JC |
