What does the cover look like? Is it nearly round or does it look like a squashed diamond?

The car could have either axle, depending on transmission type, engine type, and special options.

Both the 7¼" and the 8¼" rear axle were available in '75. How many bolts hold the rear axle cover on?

If you are lucky SOME 8 1/4's had 11x2 rear brakes as a option under a A body.

No, they didn't. Some people have swapped 11" brakes onto A-body 8¼" rear axles, because that's not a hard swap, but (1) they weren't available from the factory, and (2) it would not be "lucky" to have them; the A-bodies have bad enough problems with premature rear brake lockup with 10" rear drums.

Police cars in both Darts and Valiants 1975 . Salt Lake City Police Department. Sold new through Larry H Miller Chrysler Plymouth Dodge.
Had a whole fleet. Steve Hinckley was(is) the parts manager. That's how I found out about them. You could check if you like. One found in Socal 11x2 ''rears. The boys from Redline Gauge Works bought it and parted it out .The whole set up, Front and rear was the same used on Dodge Monaco. Ma Mopar did alot of things that never was... SOME show up from time to time. Didn't believe myself till I bought 10'' brake parts and drums and said "What the heck ??" We installed that rear in one of the Mopars at the Strip give away cars.
I'm sorry .I should have said Special Order A Body Police Cars with a 8 1/4 in my first post. My Mistake.

For what it is worth, I have come across two 70s A body 8 1/4 rear axles with 11 inch brakes.

It was 1976. Production code A38. And I have the parts manual supplement, final edition, that calls out the parts used on the A38 cars. Rear drums are specced as 10" items, not 11".

That pretty much ended by '70, and as regards brakes it certainly ended before 1975 when Federal safety certification protocols for brake systems got a great deal more stringent -- manufacturers had to type-certify each and every permutation (model, engine/weight, brake system configuration). This cost a lot of money for every permutation, and that is why brake system configurations on any given kind of car got a lot less numerous in the '74-'76 timeframe.

Yes. And the newest A-body is now most of four decades old. Seeing something on an old car does not mean the factory put it there.

For years I've been looking for something -- anything! -- put out by Chrysler to suggest they put 11" drums anywhere on an A-body, ever. So far it's always only ever been "Yeah, I saw one in a wrecking yard!" or "Yeah, my brother-in-law's roommate had one!" or "Yeah, I heard they did that in 1975!".

So far, all we have is evidence that 11" brakes can be bolted onto an 8¼" rear axle. We knew that already.

The 1976 Parts Manual just lists the 11" rear drums as "All" for models of cars...most interesting is the Aspen Volare is listed in the April 1976 Brake Supplement (81-610-1078) as 6 or 8 cylinder with H.D. Brakes as having 11"x2 1/2"...but only lists late A-bodies as having 10x 2 1/2"...(and for the late A-body those with 10" front drums get 9" rear drums...until disc brakes are standardized...)

I think I'll opt for the standard motorhome brakes at 14x2 1/2"....if I add the Rocket Assist to the Duster....along with a parachute and a ride to the padded cell...

Oh yeah?! Well the next A-body I build, I bet I'll have rear brakes that are about a hunnerd inches in diameter!!!!1!!!!

Srsly: Why am I being such a hardass about this? Because this is how bogus "common knowledge" is born and catches on. Like the "common knowledge" about the nonexistent "240CID truck slant-6" (or was it a "252"?), the "common knowledge" that all 170s got a small Carter BBS and all 225s got a large Holley 1920, the "common knowledge" about the Australian Hemi slant-6, and on and on and on…most of it supported by nothing but repetition and "Well, y'know, Chrysler built all kinds of stuff unofficially" handwaving.

The day someone shows me an A-body fender tag calling out 11" rear brakes, or a piece of factory literature saying you could get 11" rear brakes on an A-body, I'll get on here right away and eat a double helping of crow. Until that day: Nope, didn't happen.

Woah, you're going to need wheels bigger than these for that car...

p.s. 11x2 inch brakes on the bbp 8.75 in my '76 Dart. Panic stopped from 70mph to zero, no premature rear lockup. So until the day I see it, it doesn't happen.
