Anybody here use Mahle pistons? Never have seen them discussed much on here.

Mahle used to be, and likely still is, a good brand. I did not know they were making Slant pistons. It's likely they just bought someone else's company and are putting their name on it - Sealed Power, Badger....?

Yep, I saw that. Perfect Circle and Clevite did not make pistons in recent history, but maybe they had a subsidiary or other brand name that did?

I'm going to see if my machinist will order me a single piston for examination.

I'm guessing I'm getting SP pistons, machine doesn't want to tell me for some reason.

BTW according to the interchange list Clevite did make a slant piston, 9-1250.

yes,, Mahle got the Perfect Circle trademark when they absorbed Dana back in about 2005.

Mahle is typically a class act, I would not be surprised if they are making those pistons,, I would bet they are not Sealed Power as that is a Federal Mogul brand,, FM is also a very reputable piston supplier, but a competator to Mahle,, I don't see those two buying each others product.

Looking at the photo,, the skirt areas at the pin bore bosses look to be recessed more, that is not present on OE slant six pistons or the Silvolites that I purchased for my slant six build. Pulling the side pin bore flats in is a modern piston design technique to reduce the material used and as a positive consequence, piston weight is also reduced, There is no loss of strength.
I believe I also see oil return holes in the oil control ring grooves on the Mahle piston, In the photo of the Mahle piston, the open section, just below the oil control ring groove, is actually in the oil control ring groove in the OE and Silvolite pistons, looks like Mahle is using the through holes in the oil control ring groove to disburse the oil that gets behind the oil control ring..with the large slot just below the ring groove to direct the oil ahead of the ring. If that is indeed a slant six piston what I am seeing is a modern interpretation of the the OE design,,, It would be interesting to know what Mahle did for pin oiling. The OE slant pistons had a through hole in the pin bore. The Silvolites have lateral full length "slots" in the pin bore. I showed both the OE pin bore through hole and the Silvolite slot to some folks that design pistons,, they liked the slot.

the Silvolites are heavier than the stock pistons, without rings they averaged 1345g,,you can see from the side by side bottom view, everything is thicker.

Went by the machine shop and ordered the Mahles .030 for my buildup. Also splurged for the moly rings.

They look Like Heavy Stock replacement type pistons..



Good For a stock type rebuild, but not for a Lightweight Race type Reciprocating assembly.
