i was just wondering what i should watch out for when overhauling one of these motors im only 18 and im doing this on an extreme budget
and when im done the motor its going into my soon to be daily driver a 69 valiant 200 with power nothing lol

i believe it broke a few piston rings and i know it jumped time nut before it jumped time it smoked like a freight train and cylinder num 4 plug was always covered in oil |

OK, sounds like it's that time. What tools do you have at your disposal? If you have broken rings, chances are your going to need a minimum of an overbore. Probably the least expensive way to do this will be to have your machine shop order a master rebuild kit. Something with pistons, rings, bearings, cam, lifters, timing set, oil pump and a full gasket kit. You will need full measurements after machinework to find out what size parts you are going to need. Measure first, buy later. Have the rods checked and resized. Check the crank out. Magnaflux it to make sure. If it's got problems, check on here to see if somebody has a good crank. They are priced from free to outlandish. I'm sure somebody can come up with a decent crank and/or rods for you for very little money. Check the head out. It is going to need seals at a minimum. Your head may need considerably more than that. Valves, springs, and seats are likely. Full treatment will start around $400 and work it's way up. Rebuilding a slant gives you the ability to make sure that everything is to spec and in great shape. It isn't cheap though. You may be ahead to see if you can find an appropriate engine in good shape, then build as time and funds permit. The least expensive rebuild I've done in recent history that included full machine work and new parts was a bit under $2K. Mull that around. That's a new engine, some assembly required. With some mild performance mods, we're looking at a tad over $2K. For wild, we're looking at considerably more. The sky's the limit. CJ |

i have a hone and all the tools my dad used his personal stuff when he worked at napa overhauling engines and rebuilding engines i bought the car and not thinking i started it and it had been sitting for 5 years not running i didnt even pb blast the cylinders i hardly ran it after that only to move the car if it was in the way

after it ran when i first started it for like 5 min it statred smoking  andmy dad said better shut it off you dont want to screw things up cuz now you probaly broke a ring cuz you coulnt wait so yea thats what happened :tsk:

You'll want to get the three books described in this thread and do a good deal of reading before you start in. It will make the job a whole lot easier, less costly, and more fun. |

thanks dan, my dad has two of the books. i also found out that the motor is the original numbers matching motor
