Post subject:  75k transmission making noise in 1st gear

I have a 64 truck with about 75k miles on it. It just started making a rattling noiise when in first gear - not pulling, not holding back, just coasting. Rattle, Rattle Rattle. Push the clutch and it stops, push the gas and it stops. Going down a hill where it's holding the truck back and it makes no noise.

Does the front bearing wear out at 70k on these transmissions?

Thanks,
Danny

This may just be the main gears slapping back and forth as the engine and driveshaft swap load surfaces on the gears. AFAIK, my T5s have always made this noise. W/o hearing it, it's hard to say.

If it's loud, then you might be dealing with a main or input or countershaft bearing??

Is this a ball & trunion driveshaft on an 833 4spd trans? If so, I have 2 of them in my garage that I just acquired.

Is 1st gear straight cut or helical?

I can see straight cut gears rattling....
