Hi all,

I have just done both sides of the throttle linkage adjustment (pedal and kickdown rods plus kickdown tranny lever), in an attempt to cure my slipping tranny.

The acceleration is much more responsive than before, but the car still slips in 2nd and 3rd, or sometimes will not even enter them. The fluid seems to be at the right level, is a nice reddish color, and does not smell burnt.

What are the best next items to check?

Thanks!

Has the filter been changed recently?
If so, was the correct 60-65 fiter used?
Do you have a FSM?
It sounds like it's time to run some pressure checks.

Hi Doc,

I have no idea when the filter was last changed. I have owned the car for a year and have not changed it myself. I suspect the last owner had been planning on it, as a cheap filter kit was in the trunk.

I do have an FSM but no tools for checking the pressure.

Sometimes 2nd and 3rd kick in when I let off the pedal a bit, so maybe the linkage is still adjusted improperly? They still slip around after that though. I'm just teaching myself so forgive the abundant ignorance. :p

You might get lucky and get away with just a band adjustment and fluid/filter change, but more likely it's time for a transmission overhaul.

You'll want to get the three books described in this thread as soon as you can.

Thanks guys, I actually do have the FSM, Stockel book and the troubleshooting book, per their recommendation elsewhere here.

I'm getting pretty familiar with the 64 Valiant itself but just beginning to work my way through Stockel.

I was afraid I might be due for a rebuild... Fortunately there's a reputable guy in my area of SoCal, who just overhauled the 727 on my dad's 330.

Thanks again guys here's hoping I can work up overhaul funds soon!!

Start with dropping the pan, changing the filter (confirm it is the correct "2 hole" early filter) and do the band adjustment / check as noted... that may fix it or it will confirm that it is time for a rebuild.
(if you find lots of friction material in the pan, then a rebuild is coming soon)
