Post subject:  Oil Consumption Survey

I am curious to know how much engine oil slant sixes use. I have a 1965 Barracuda with 225 and it uses:

Consumption - 1 Litre / 1100 miles
Oil Grade - 15W-40 with 10W-30 top-ups
Mileage - 186,000 miles (best guess)

Does anyone know the typical oil consumption for a new /6 after it's been broken-in?

I think it depends on the condition of your engine. The worse your rings are, the more oil it's going to consume.

My 225 consumes about a quart of 15w-40 about every 20 days or so. It was drinking a little under a quart every 15 days or so when I was running 10w-30. My 225 is no where near perfect and is about '?87,000' miles.

I would think a freshly rebuilt/new 225 shouldn't consume much of any.

Consumption - 1 Quart / 1700 miles
Oil Grade - 0W-30 Mobile1 with 5W-30 super tech conventional topups (ya walmart brand dino oil)
Mileage - ??? says 54,000 and was supposedly "rebuilt" that long ago, but who knows what rebuilt means, I've put nearly 30k on it.

I would imagine that a quart every 3 weeks is killer on the wallet!

1973 Duster with a 'rebuilt"engine. I changed the oil in March, made a round trip to Vegas, several dozen trips down the strip, plus commuter runs and have not burned a single drop of oil.

About time to change the oil again.

225 rebuilt some time ago at unknown mileage, last time head was off, just a very slight ridge could be felt at top of bore. This engine uses about a quart of 10w 30 in 2500 to 3000 miles. When valve lash is done in between change interval, generally a good puddle of oil will be found on floor.

68 turbo Dart motor:
166k miles, rebuilt in 1989 to stock specs 0.030" over. Uses a quart every 1500-2000 miles. Makes 330 HP @ 9 psi boost and gets 22-24 MPG hwy.

Between leaks and such, I usually figure anything better than a quart every 800 miles is fine with me. Other motors are all over the place. Pouring oil into an engine is a heckuva lot cheaper and easier than rebuilding it, unless the leakin/burnin gets really bad (< 100 mi/qt).

Worst burner I had was a 72 winter beater Dart w/70k miles and probably stuck rings. Owned it for 1.5 yrs around 1990 then my bro had it for 1-2 yrs. Didn't leak anything, but used about 1 qt every 80-100 miles.

My 74 Duster would use 1/2 quart every 150 miles. Being young and stupid, I changed the head on it due to a burnt valve when I got the car, and shortly afterwards the rings went bye-bye! The blowby was so bad that it would oil down everything under the hood during long trips. Funny thing is, it would get down to a quart low and stop burning oil. Engine had about 240,000 hard miles on it thanks to the previous owners.

My 82 D-150 (engine is currently being overhauled) didn't burn a drop of oil, it just leaked HORRIBLY from about three different spots on the engine. The rear main leaked, it leaked between the head and the block, and it leaked from the oil pan. The tailgate and anything you were towing would get oil sprayed while going down the road. I used to tell my friends that they should have painted that engine Alpine Green, since the only other leaker I've seen that could equal that slant was a Detroit Diesel.

The high mileage stock 225 in my '64 Valiant leaked a quart every 2,000 miles, but burned very little. When I restored the car, I installed a fresh rebuild '79 engine. It is now about broken in at 1,000 miles, and I just added a quart.

Slants I've owned in the past normally required no oil between 2,000-2,500 mile changes. Even my son's 300k Dart didn't require more than a quart added between changes.
