I have access to an 8.8 leaf spring, disc brake rear from a 2000 Mercury version of the Exploder. Is that the correct generation for the A body swap?

If so, what is a reasonable price for it? 200,000+ miles, unknown ratio, unknown if it is a locker or not.

Thanks!

D :D

Thats the right one....you also need another short side axle,

One like that is worth $200 .

One with 4.11 gears and tracloc is worth more.....

Cool! 8)

Chase and I need to make a Pull-A-Part trip for the same thing (or a Dakota rear) before the weather gets yucky.

I have a friend who is putting together a 66 Valiant Turbo car and he put in an unmodified 8.8 out of a Mustang. With the right offset wheel it bolted right in. Pretty sure it was disc brake rear.

Down here in the south west $145-180 tops. With the xplorer being the #1 cash for clunkers their is an aboundance of them. I had about 11 to chose from at the local pick a part. With 200k miles you will find the shafts worn and the bearings due for replacement track lok most likly worn out also. I had a shop shorten mine installed new shafts and all new bearings new cobra track-lock and 3.73 gears, basiclly bolt in ready I had around $1k into my swap. I am happy with my choice of going that route even though a used 8.25 would have been cheaper.

Maybe try an ad for a Exploder parts car on Craigslist.

Those rears look beefy. 3:73 is a popular number. I didn't know you had to narrow one side!

Will a Dakota rear work in an A body?? track width and spring perches the same? I seem to remember that the early ones used the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, but hadn't thought about those other dimensions.

The dakota axles no matter what gen. Will be to wide mabe if you move the axle perches and then run a crazy offset wheel you may squezz it in but not likelly.

There is a couple good reasons to go with the explorer 8.8 you can get rear disc brakes, limited slip diffs, factory gears range from 3.08 to 4.10s, 31spline axle shafts, 1/2 ton bearings. I have bought a couple any where from $80-$225max and that was a low miles 4.10 open diff hard to find but wanted that one because I put an aussie locker in it trussed the housing and tubes and it went in to a cherokee rock crawler. Lots of jeep guys swap them in because they can handle the punishment. And I know a few mustang guys who push 650-700hp thru them.

Having the machine work done does not have to be expensive it all depends on the shop. And you will save your self money if you do some of the work your self like cut the brackets off, and weld on your own purches. The 8.8 swap in my valiant got expensive but I have a brand new axle now, initial purchase, shortened the housing, new king cobra trac-loc, new alloy shafts, new bearings, perches installed, new ebc rotors and pads and serviced the calipers, new brake lines, now have about $1250 into it. What would it cost to find a 8.75 housing, new center section, bearings, brakes and lines. Now a days its hard pressed to do that for less and then its still heavier axle then the 8.8. Find a low miles 8.8 not needing all the new goodies and rebuild the swap could be done less than $400.
