about a month ago my lancer would crank but wouldn't start. my uncle came by to help, primed the carb with a little gas and it fired right up. i had the same problem again this past week. it was running on a monday and then the car sat garaged for maybe 3 or 4 days at most without being started. i spent a couple days just casually trying to start it with no intention of driving. primed the carb again last night and it didn't immediately start, maybe i flooded it.... but it did right away this morning. does this pretty much mean my fuel pump is crapping out?

the car had under a quarter tank of gas and it has been exceptionally hot around here lately (like everywhere) if that matters.

With the old carbs and sitting for a few days in hot weather, the gas evaporates out of the fuel bowl..........

Very typical, yes. The carburetor and fuel pump could likely well do with a careful rebuild -- the 1961 pump is rebuildable and, come to think of it, you ought to get on that because there was a TSB on the '60-'62 fuel pumps sawing through their improperly-hardened pivot pins, causing loss of all fuel supply to the carburetor with resultant engine shutdown. The valve plates in the pump are probably a little stiff and degraded from having sat for so long (and then exposed to current fuel formulations which are not 1961-spec). Assuming you have the original pump, a Carter unit that is held together with screws around its perimeter, easily visible from above as you look down on it, the fuel pump rebuild kit comes from here. Carter pump number is M2996S. Rebuild is simple, requires only basic tools and a bench vise.

The carburetor part that affects this what you describe is the inlet needle and seat. The ones in the kits from Daytona Parts have a better design than the generally-available ones.

And do the Fuel line mod.

I had something very similar happening a little over a week ago. I kept cranking but it wouldn't start. I was able to get it started with starter fluid (the best $1.99 I ever spent). Once the weekend rolled around I changed the fuel pump (This one I think). Thing instantly fires up hot or cold now.

I've sometimes seen that if my car has been parked for a long time, the float valve gets stuck shut - the car can't get fuel to start, but fires right up with starting fluid. Once I've freed the float (sometimes just by cranking while, sometimes by tapping the carb with a ball peen hammer, sometimes by loosening the top and shaking it) the problem disappears.

I suspect it has to do with the very damp E10 we get around here. It seems to happen even on low-mileage carbs with viton valves.

so my uncle and i got back into the fuel pump today. took the line off and sure enough, it wasn't drawing. wouldn't even hold a small piece of paper up.

so, the best bet is to go with the rebuild via the link slantsix dan provided?

i was searching the forums here a bit....doesn't seem like an aftermarket pump has many fans. my uncle found one online....a PV for slant six. i'm guessing you guys are going to say those suck?


well....not suck....then it would be working....you know what i mean.....

That depends on the goal. If you need the car back up and running sooner than you can get hold of a rebuild kit and use it, then slap on whatever pump you can find locally and rebuild the original at your leisure.

well...no hurry, so i think i am going to go with the rebuild. i did see an original carter on ebay that would do the job...but like you said, the rebuild should hold up longer.

it's weird...on the phone he said he saw 3 available on ebay...he also said that PV stood for proven value. i think that's what he said.....that's what i wrote down.....but i can't find a thing on the internet, much less ebay, about that name. maybe i misunderstood.

While you're at it, I'd suggest that you replace the rubber fuel hose that goes from the line on the body to the pump inlet, as well as the hose at the fuel tank pickup assembly (fuel gauge sender). When those hoses get too old & crack, they can start to suck air in(often without leaking gas out) which causes all sorts of fun-to-diagnose fuel starvation problems.

yeah...the hoses probably should be done now as well.

what's weird is that i found the original fuel pump in the trunk, and the one that was installed now has a loose inlet.....

weird that a car with 6K on it would have had the fuel pump switched out....???


the installed one...might explain why the car was dogging out the last time i drove it......

I like the Carter (original) type better than the aftermarket unit such as installed on the engine.
