Post subject:  Humming sound from rear end under acceleration?

Hi

As the title says...

I've noticed lately that there is humming sound coming from the rear of the car during acceleration and also during normal cruise. It "almost" goes away when i release the gas and coast (still there but very faint can barely hear).

What could cause this? If the axle is low on oil why would the sound go away when I release the gas?

Thanks

Syed

40 plus year old gears, and gear lash slop......too much play.

If the rear end lube goes low then more heat & wear will happen on the "running" side of the gears. That wear (and extra clearance) will cause the "howl" on the load side of the gear.
When you let-off the gas and the vehicle transitions to deceleration, load moves to the "back-side" of the gear teeth, this contact area typically has less wear so it does not make the noise.
