Hey guys,

I've got a carter BBD (318 model) and the electric choke from carbsonly (kit 1232). I'm having issues with clearance and general understanding.

First, the choke is meant to be bent toward the front of the car when mounted? There doesn't seem to be enough room. The choke vacuum diaphragm is in the way. I think I could make it fit if I shaved a good bit off the edge of the choke (just the excess plate the spring is attached to). Does anyone think this would ruin the choke or effect it's functionality?

Second, the choke rod is pretty far from where it should be connecting. I knew that I would need to fabricate a bracket of sorts to make it work (like what reed posted in this thread) but it seems like it would have to be pretty long. Longer than the one inch one used on the holley in the pictures.

For me to get this right (making the extension), I need some clarification on where the rod should start when cold and end when warm. The rod should start at the top of the grove on the choke and move down as it gets warm, correct?

Also, What sized screw should be used for holding down the choke to the choke pocket?

Choke should be LIGHTLY closed when cold.. Adjust your choke rod accordingly.

Does that help? I had to mount the unit on the exhaust manifold and push it towards the carb a bit to bend the mounting bracket, but once I got that done it fit and works beautifully.

If you are using a 318 BBD, the carbsonly electric kit will NOT work. You need to either switch to a 225 choke linkage on the side of the choke butterfly or install the little adapter in the link you posted. Also, the 318 BBD choke pulloff diaphragm is shaped differently than the 225 BBD choke pull off. Get a choke pulloff for a 1978 Plymouth Volare wagon with a 225.

All very good information, thank you guys!

I wish I had that much room to work with between my choke and the carb, I feel like the carb is sitting onto on the choke pocket.

I just bought the 318 pulloff :/ and I can't seem to find a single slant six in the local junk yards around my area, let alone a super six (had to buy an entire engine just to take my set up off it). I'm going to have to expand my search radius. I think that if I just filed down the forward top edge of the choke plate so it was flat, I could fit it. As it is now, it won't lay side ways like it's supposed to. I think I'll give it a shot as long as I stay away from the choke housing. If it still won't fit, Ill order a 225 choke diaphragm online somewhere. Once I get it mounted at the correct angle, I can try to fabricate that bracket (I've got a 5 ft by 1" by 1/4 " piece of aluminium, plenty of room for trial and error)

Those pictures are going to help a lot. I'm a visual person.

If you go to the "jump to" box at the bottom of the page, you can scroll to the parts wanted section, and place a want ad for what you need. That or watch the parts for sale section or ebay.

Huh? You do not need to file anything down to get the choke to work. Save yourself a lot of problems and just order the slant six choke pulloff now. Then fabricate the v-8 to slant six choke adapter piece and you will be set. The pulloff you need is a NIEHOFF Part # VC428, for sale for $5.28 on Rockauto right now.

One thing you may not understrand is that you have an aftermarket choke. That's actually better if you can figure how to hook it up. $125 or so better. If you have one for a 318 it may not work. the rods are all differenrt.

I'll order the 225 BBD vacuum diaphragm from rockauto and set that up I suppose, should see if I need anything else first, Gonna pay more to ship it then I'll pay for it. Though, I think I'll wait to see if rockauto can resolve a dispute that I've had going on for about two weeks now regarding reimbursement of shipping.

Any updates? I'm having the same issue. Was just going to go manual choke lever but would like a similar or electric as my wife drives it alot... Hmm
