Do everything Tim K said to do in your other post. It should get you well along. I've done all the things he said, with good results. Now, once you've done that, reinstall the dist. in the motor, with the vac. adv. canister pointing forward and the rotor pointing more or less toward the #1 plug wire terminal on the cap, and reattach the ground wire. With the cap off and the timing mark on the harmonic balancer at or very near TDC, turn the dist. so the high point of reluctor is closest to the pickup. This will put you close to 0 degrees, or TDC. Snug down the distributor adjustment screw. Use a brass feeler gauge to set the air gap between the reluctor and pickup. Install the cap and plug wires. Be careful to get them on in the right order. Plug the vacuum advance hose. Now, if all is well, the engine should start. Start it, warm it up, and attach a vacuum gauge to a "direct" vacuum port(one that's below the throttle plates of the carb). Loosen the dist. adjustment screw and advance the distributor(turn counter-clockwise) until the vac gauge reads the highest vacuum. Then, tighten the dist. adjustment screw, and adjust the idle(it will increase quite a bit as you advance the distributor). Notice that with this procedure I leave the vac. advance disconnected. I do that to avoid detonation. With this setup, the extra advance is not desirable. Finally, take it for a spin and listen for any pinging/detonation. Some of the experts here may cringe at this operation(and justifiably so), but I've done this and found a good deal of all-around added performance for basically no money. I hope this wasn't more than you wanted to know. If you haven't done this kind of thing before, you might seek out someone who has, just to "supervise" you. It may make the job go much faster and easier. |

Yes, there is some extra performance "hiding" inside that distributor. Here is a link to some added information on distributor recurving and "dial-in" for better performance. http://www.dutra.org/doug/draft-webpage ... ibutor.htm DD |
