I have found going lighter is better than heavier on torque. If you crush the gasket the movement of the manifolds will be reduced. That is a bad. You don't want them so tight that they will crack from multiple heat cycles and from being too tight. I made the mistake of over tightening my first gasket which was entirely unnecessary...It will seal well with lighter torque when compared to a Felpro. I use a inch pound torque wrench an make several light passes to gradually snug up the manifolds. This way they can move around during the heat cycles and not crack the exhaust manifold and still seal very well. Much, much better sealing compared to the the stock steel gasket which always seemed to leak somewhere. |

That would be a good start, I've gone 10-15 if using a 'conglomeration' of parts (i.e Clifford Hyperpak, Dutra Front Manifold, Stock Modified rear manifols)...where you have 3 parts sliding at different rates...I've gone as far as 20 lbs as a 'final' torque for them, but as stated, that's a one shot deal...no more torquing and not reuseable even if you 'PAM' the gaskets. -D.Idiot |

Just thinking........... Since ideally the manifold expands out from the center; would variable torque settings be good. Have the middle bolts tighter to keep the manifold aligned and in place, then have the outer bolts looser so the manifold can move..... |

I worked with (Remflex) early on finding the best torque specs and spraying the gaskets with PAM or Teflon. I tore up a few of the first sets of gaskets from over torquing and they were gracious enough to send replacements. It is a different learning curve working with this type of gasket material and since they are so thick. The temptation is to over torque and crush them. To avoid this I use brass nuts and a small inch pound style torque wrench. It is important to let the manifolds move around as they expand and contract during the heat cycles so they do not crack yet make a good seal. |
